The Hoboken School Board meeting recognized student excellence, announced leadership reappointments, and addressed key facility upgrades. The session included accolades for students from various schools, the re-election of board leaders, and updates on essential infrastructure projects, alongside acknowledgments of long-serving staff members nearing retirement.
The meeting began with the reorganization of the board, where three members were sworn in, and the election of a new president and vice president took place. Following the administrative proceedings, the meeting transitioned into a celebration of student achievements.
Tasha Fu, an eleventh-grade student at Hoboken High School, was honored as the December Student of the Month. Tasha’s impressive academic record, with a GPA surpassing 4.4, was underlined by her enrollment in six Advanced Placement courses. Her commitment to extracurricular activities was notable, serving as vice president of the Student Government and participating in the Youth Advisory Commission. Tasha also contributes as a teacher’s assistant in Urban Arts. Her future aspirations include attending a college in an urban setting and ultimately pursuing a career in law. Tasha’s recognition was met with applause, and she expressed gratitude for the support from her teachers and the board.
The student recognitions continued with Riley Clapper, a second-grade student from Branch School, being named Student of the Month. Riley was praised for her hard work and positive disposition, qualities that have made her an asset to her school community. Her achievements were celebrated by her teacher and principal, who emphasized her curiosity and resilience in the face of challenges. Riley’s family joined in the celebration of her accomplishments.
Further student accolades were given to Alesia Shamy, a third-grader from Wallace Elementary, and Gemma Roberts, a kindergartner from Connor’s Elementary School. Both were recognized for their exceptional efforts and contributions to their school communities. Alesia’s determination and positive impact were applauded, while Gemma’s leadership and enthusiasm for learning were highlighted.
Elliot Nazaro, a student at Hoboken Middle School, was also acknowledged for his confidence and supportive nature. His role as a model student was underscored by his involvement in various extracurricular activities. The student representatives from Hoboken Middle School, Liba Newfield and Avery Battles, further elaborated on recent school events, such as the introduction of a new advisory program and an exciting upcoming field trip to the Bueller Challenger and Science Center.
In addition to student achievements, the board discussed several topics related to the district’s facilities and finances. The Facilities Committee reported on recent maintenance work at Hoboken High School, including the replacement of a sewer line and the installation of new water meters. A new boiler has been ordered, with funding provided through a grant from the Schools Development Authority. An energy audit is underway, expected to continue through early January, with plans for replacing scaffolding at Demarest in the pipeline.
The finance committee, led by Miss Cona, addressed ongoing concerns about state funding, a recurring point of discussion. The committee also touched on personnel matters, notably the upcoming retirement of Joyce Good, the district’s business administrator and board secretary. Miss Cona acknowledged Good’s long-standing service and shared the board’s appreciation for her contributions. The committee also discussed various compensations for additional work by faculty and staff, and the creation of new stipended coaching positions.
The board’s Wellness Committee, represented by Miss Norwood, highlighted two agenda items that received recommendations for approval, including the inclusion of service animals in schools and a health screening initiative supported by the Jersey City Lions Club.
In closing, the board president expressed gratitude for the board’s cooperative efforts and noted that a strategic planning process is underway, with a survey extended to parents and guardians. An upcoming meeting about a redevelopment plan for a property on Jackson Street was announced, potentially leading to new preschool classrooms. The Hoboken Middle School’s upcoming production of “Alice in Wonderland” was also mentioned, adding a cultural note to the meeting’s conclusion.
