Hoboken Schools Celebrate Student Achievements and Unveil New Financial Literacy Lab
- Meeting Overview:
At the October 2025 Hoboken Board of Education meeting, student achievements were celebrated, and a new financial literacy lab was unveiled at Hoboken High School. The meeting also highlighted professional development for educators, updates on school programs, and community involvement.
A key highlight was the unveiling of a new financial literacy lab at Hoboken High School, made possible through a partnership with the Hoboken Public Education Foundation and Advanced Realty Investors. The lab features advanced technology including a Bloomberg terminal and ticker, as well as new furniture designed to enhance the learning environment. Students will now have access to courses such as business administration through the Wharton School of Business and a finance course through Cornell University. Additionally, a stock market essentials course will allow students to earn Bloomberg market concepts certification, providing them with valuable skills for future careers in finance.
The meeting also recognized the achievements of five Hoboken High School students who were named semi-finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program, highlighting the competitive nature of the program. The academic success center at the high school, now under new leadership, aims to offer structured support to students during school hours, with a focus on monitoring grades and attendance to ensure academic improvement.
Student achievements were a focal point of the meeting, with the recognition of September Students of the Month from various schools. Claire Schneider from Hoboken High School stood out for her leadership and community service, maintaining a GPA over 4.0 while participating in numerous extracurricular activities. Her community service contributions, including over 100 hours of volunteer work, earned her an ambassador award. Claire’s involvement in student government, Best Buddies Club, and the ANA tutoring program was highlighted as exemplary, along with her musical talents and athletic participation.
The meeting further celebrated the achievements of 54 educators who completed extensive training through the Orton Gillingham Academy, supported by the Hoboken Public Education Foundation. This professional development, involving 30 to 60 hours of training, equips educators with skills to enhance literacy instruction, representing a commitment to providing students with access to expert education.
Superintendent Dr. Christine Johnson expressed gratitude for the successful execution of back-to-school nights, attributing the events’ success to the collaboration of principals, teachers, support staff, and community partners. The positive feedback underscored the district’s focus on curriculum, student support, and school climate.
In addition, the meeting addressed various school events and achievements. The Hoboken High School community celebrated Italian Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month with cultural events, and the Redwing football team was congratulated for their undefeated season. The high school’s sports teams, including soccer and tennis, are advancing into county playoffs.
The meeting concluded with updates on district-wide initiatives, including adaptive testing formats for the NJSLA, new partnerships for job readiness programs, and the introduction of a lunch and Latin program aimed at enhancing literacy and verbal skills. The finance committee reviewed and approved a standard agenda, highlighting a lease agreement for preschool space and a corrective action plan for kitchen equipment purchases.
