Holliston School Committee Faces Calls for DEI Focus in Superintendent Search
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Holliston School Committee meeting, community members urged the committee to intensify its focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as it searches for a new superintendent. Angela Paige, representing a group called Diverse Holliston, presented a letter signed by nearly 100 community members. The letter emphasized the necessity of including a DEI-focused member in the selection process, arguing that while diversity among candidates is important, it is inadequate without expertise to address the school community’s challenges. Supporters of this initiative expressed concerns about the district’s previous efforts in DEI, pointing out a perceived disconnect between stated values and practical actions.
The speaker expressed frustration at the lack of action following a 2022 equity audit, urging the committee to implement the audit’s recommendations actively.
In response, a committee member clarified that equity considerations had been part of the superintendent search from the start. The member detailed the screening team’s composition, which includes professionals with relevant experience in education and equity, and underscored the committee’s dedication to addressing DEI.
The meeting also included discussions on curriculum changes and course offerings for the next academic year. Key updates include minor social studies adjustments, such as the removal of Modern World History and an increased focus on U.S. History II and a civics action course. World languages and math courses are being restructured for clarity and expanded pathways, respectively. Notably, bridge classes designed for students previously in sub-separate classes are being expanded, offering integrated support in core subjects.
Budget discussions were another focal point of the meeting. The committee reviewed the FY27 budget, factoring in approximately $3.14 million in circuit breaker funds and an $886,000 federal 240 grant for special education needs. The budget request reflects a 5.06% increase over the previous year, driven mainly by payroll costs. The committee also highlighted a significant reduction in special education budgeting due to fewer out-of-district students, despite rising tuition and transportation costs.
The meeting concluded with updates on the superintendent search process. Community engagement was emphasized, with plans for candidate interviews and forums to include public attendance, surveys, and feedback. The committee aims to ensure transparency and encourage community participation in selecting the new superintendent. The search firm HYA will begin recruiting applicants, with community forums planned during the finalists’ site visits to gather informed opinions.
