The meeting also covered the approval of the employee handbook as a whole, following the amendments. Discussions then moved to the family handbook, where duplicated content in the attendance section was noted but not recognized as a new issue. The committee ensured that, once adopted, the handbook would be translated into various languages, including Spanish and Haitian Creole, to accommodate all families.

Attention was also given to the AI use policy in the handbook, which lacked finalized guidance. The phrase “link forthcoming” was suggested for removal to prevent confusion, acknowledging that the AI work group’s report had not been shared. Despite the absence of comprehensive guidance, it was proposed that the document be distributed to families with the understanding it could be amended later.

Further, the committee addressed ongoing concerns about chronic absenteeism, seeking clarity on criteria for counting absences and the role of documentation in evaluations. The focus remained on addressing attendance issues while adhering to state requirements.

The Holyoke School Committee also tentatively scheduled a meeting with the city council to discuss financial matters, slated for August 18. This meeting aims to align financial strategies and ensure cohesive planning between educational and municipal bodies.

In other discussions, a proposed trip for Hoya High School’s basketball team to Puerto Rico faced possible cancellation due to leadership decisions and interpretations of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s guidelines. The uncertainty surrounding the trip highlighted the complexities of planning extracurricular activities under regulatory constraints.
