Holyoke’s Dean Tech Awarded $1.25 Million for Vocational Program Expansion
- Meeting Overview:
The Holyoke School Committee meeting on May 11th highlighted developments at Dean Technical High School, including a $1.25 million grant for career and technical education (CTE) expansion, recognition of outstanding students, and upcoming senior events. The committee also approved various out-of-state trips and discussed budgetary matters.
Dean Technical High School received a substantial boost through a $1.25 million grant from the state’s career and technical education expansion initiative. This funding aims to modernize and relocate the school’s electrical and metal fabrication programs while developing a new early education and care program. This enhancement will increase the capacity of CTE programs, allowing more students to enroll and benefit from these educational opportunities. The initiative is in partnership with Holyoke Community College and also includes adult training programs in clean energy and advanced manufacturing. These efforts have upgraded tools, supplies, and learning opportunities, fostering workforce development in the region.
Dean Tech also celebrated two students for their outstanding achievements. Senior Daniel Garcia was honored with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendent award for his top academic performance, including a perfect score on the math MCAS test. Ariel Suarez Baez was named the school’s outstanding vocational technical student of the year. In addition to individual accolades, Dean Tech will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new union apprenticeship training program, further strengthening the school’s vocational education offerings.
The committee approved several out-of-state trips, including a visit to the Playhouse on Park in West Hartford, Connecticut, and participation in the National Conference for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth in Tennessee. The Bend the Art Conference in Chicago was also on the agenda, with multiple staff members set to attend.
Budget discussions included the approval of gifts and grants, notably a donation to the Lawrence School from a local bank, which will be used to supplement educational resources. The committee also scheduled a public budget hearing for June 8th to gather community feedback on the fiscal year 2027 budget.
