Homeowners Raise Alarming Oversight Concerns at Brigantine City Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Brigantine City Council meeting was marked by serious allegations from residents concerning their homeowners association’s financial practices, alongside discussions on traffic safety and infrastructure improvements. The council also acknowledged community achievements and ongoing projects.
A major point of contention raised during the meeting involved allegations of financial mismanagement within a local homeowners association. Residents voiced their dissatisfaction with the association’s management company, accusing it of overspending and a lack of transparency. Frank Sajorski, representing a homeowners association in the Mornings, detailed issues dating back to July 2021, emphasizing that residents struggled to gain access to financial records without legal intervention. Sajorski stated, “We have discovered a lot of overspending,” citing examples such as unnecessary expenditures on tree cutting and expressing concern over the reduction in the number of annual meetings from ten to five, where residents were reportedly not allowed to voice their concerns.
Another resident echoed these concerns, describing a contentious relationship with the management company and detailing accusations of harassment. This resident also raised alarm over the association’s upcoming election, claiming potential voter fraud due to the low percentage of full-time residents, which they believe could facilitate ballot stuffing. They requested city assistance to ensure a fair election process, highlighting fears among residents of retaliation if they spoke out.
The council discussed the limitations of their jurisdiction over such private entities. A council member noted that the city’s direct oversight is limited, recommending that residents contact the county prosecutor’s office for potential legal action, drawing parallels to a similar case in Florida.
The meeting also addressed traffic concerns, with residents advocating for changes to improve safety on local streets. One resident from 337 9th Street South highlighted the heavy traffic on their block, the only two-way street in the area between 8th and 13th streets, and requested a traffic study to compare patterns with other streets. They argued that such data could justify converting 9th Street into a one-way street to reduce congestion and improve safety for children and seniors. The council engaged with the resident to understand their objectives and the outcomes they desired from the potential traffic study.
In addition to these issues, the council celebrated the achievements of the 12th Cottage Board baseball team, which had recently won a championship. The team was recognized for their accomplishments. A new trophy was introduced and will remain with the team until the next champion is crowned.
Infrastructure projects also featured prominently in the meeting. Several resolutions were approved, including contracts for improvements at the Beayhore Avenue intersection and the installation of emergency services at the Northshore sewer station. The council authorized a service agreement for a deferred compensation plan and approved a change order for an emergency generator contract.
The council also acknowledged the success of a recent National Night Out event, praising the efforts of the fire department and other city departments. The mayor announced an upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new miniature golf facility, expressing appreciation for the public works department’s dedication to the project despite previous delays caused by weather.
Environmental initiatives were discussed, with a presentation from the Brigantine Green Team about a tree inventory project. Residents were encouraged to participate in documenting trees on public property, emphasizing the value of community involvement in environmental conservation efforts.
