- Meeting Overview:
The Hopkinton School Committee recently convened to discuss the Hopkins School project, addressing the increased construction costs and the potential impact on the community’s budget. The project, which is expected to be completed by fall 2026, has seen a $3 million rise in the budget, primarily due to design changes, additional electrical service needs, and increased soft costs. The committee focused on strategies for cost management, including the possibility of reducing geothermal wells to save costs, reassessing the site work package, and reusing sprinklers.
The presentation by Commodore Builders, the project’s construction managers, outlined the progress and the phased approach to construction. Preparatory work is slated to begin in mid-July, with the new addition starting in early fall and renovations scheduled for February 2026. Emphasis was placed on minimizing disruption to the school’s operations and ensuring safety throughout the construction process. Traffic management and parking arrangements were discussed, as well as the integration of the new addition with the existing building using similar materials and color schemes.
Comparisons of the project’s cost to other school construction projects in the state were presented. Despite the cost increase, the committee discussed measures to tighten the budget, such as a six-figure cost-saving potential by reducing geothermal wells and removing allowances through test pits to identify the limits of the ledge.
Logistical concerns were also a focal point, particularly the impact of construction on the Loop Road and surrounding areas. The committee assured coordination of deliveries and management of the construction schedule to minimize disruptions during school hours and events. Additionally, the committee deliberated on the installation of a new generator to support the additional load from the new equipment and all-electric kitchen, with an estimated cost of $550,000.
The discussion extended to the retention of disciplinary records in the school’s PowerSchool system, with committee members debating the access to this information and its potential impact on students. The inclusion of bullying-related data in PowerSchool was also discussed, with only administrators and parents having access to this sensitive information.
Furthermore, the meeting touched on the reauthorization of debt for projects that came in under budget, the approval of an additional assistant cook/baker position, and the revision of the Hopkinton bullying prevention and intervention plan. The committee also addressed the policy JICI, prohibiting all dangerous weapons on school grounds, with detailed criteria for the acceptance of religious artifacts like the kirpan.
The committee chose to postpone the discussion on the new school project name until another member was present. They did discuss the potential names focusing on geographic and natural environment-related themes. The names under consideration, such as Charles River, Charles View, and Whitehall, were debated for their distinctiveness and geographical significance.
The meeting concluded with the approval of various items, including an additional middle school track coach and travel for two middle school robotics teams to a competition in Dallas, Texas. Future agenda items include a review of sports sizing and expenses district-wide.
