International Falls City Council Forms Committee to Address Kerry Park Arena’s Future
- Meeting Overview:
The International Falls City Council meeting held on September 2nd featured multiple resolutions and discussions, the most significant of which was the formation of a committee to work with International Falls Recreation Hockey board members and other stakeholders on the future of Kerry Park Arena. Additionally, the council approved several permits and licenses for local events and discussed the maintenance of local public services.
In response to the ongoing concerns regarding the maintenance and viability of the Kerry Park Arena, the council agreed to form a committee to collaborate with the Recreation Hockey board and other involved parties. The committee aims to assess the arena’s current deficiencies and explore solutions to ensure it remains a sustainable community asset. This decision followed a meeting with Recreation Hockey members, emphasizing the need for a focused group to address the arena’s challenges. Two council members volunteered to join this committee.
Another notable decision was the approval of a home occupation interim use permit for a cosmetology salon. This approval came after it was revealed that the salon had been operating without the necessary zoning clearance from the city. The interim use permit is specific to the current owner and will not transfer if the property is sold.
The council also passed resolutions approving temporary liquor licenses and raffle permits for events hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas Church and the Friends of the Falls Fire Department.
In employment matters, the council approved the internal posting for a heavy equipment operator position and a maintenance worker position. They also agreed on the removal of inactive emergency medical technicians from the active roster of the International Falls Ambulance Service, following routine annual reviews.
Lastly, a unique initiative, “Shape the Future of Koochiching County,” was announced. This countywide forum, stemming from a survey conducted by local stakeholders, will focus on community engagement and collaboration across the county to address local issues such as healthcare and employment. The meeting is scheduled for September 11th at Bakus, inviting residents to participate in shaping the county’s future.
