Islamorada Approves Zoning Map Amendments to Correct Previous Oversights
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Islamorada Local Planning Agency meeting, officials approved two ordinances to amend the village’s future land use and zoning maps for a property on Upper Matecumbe Key, addressing previous zoning oversights. Both amendments were requested by James S. Lupino, representing the property owners, and aim to align the property’s zoning with its intended use, thereby preventing potential future issues.
The first ordinance involved amending the future land use map from residential high to residential medium for the property located at 80839 Old Highway. This change was necessary to rectify an oversight from when multiple parcels were combined without adjusting the zoning to reflect the property’s actual use. The second ordinance sought to amend the official zoning map from multifamily to settler’s residential. The property’s owners have expressed their preference to maintain the current use, which includes single-family homes and accessory structures, rather than developing a multifamily complex.
Planning staff supported both amendments, noting that the proposed changes would result in fewer permitted uses and a reduction in allowable density, aligning with the owners’ intentions and the character of the surrounding area. The changes required separate motions and votes, both of which passed unanimously.
