Kasson-Mantorville School Board Discusses Emergency Communication Plan and Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Kasson-Mantorville School Board focused on enhancing its emergency communication plan, celebrated student achievements, and acknowledged community support for school programs. The board also addressed several logistical issues, including construction projects and policy updates.
The meeting began with a discussion about the district’s emergency communication plan. The plan has been crafted to ensure that families receive consistent and accurate information, especially during emergencies. Multilingual staff members play a role in this process, facilitating communication and ensuring inclusivity. The district advisory committee recently reviewed the plan, which aligns with the broader strategic goals of fostering belonging, communication, and inclusivity within the district. While the plan formalizes existing practices without introducing major changes, one board member praised the staff’s efforts in bridging communication with families and helping them access necessary tools. The connections built with families were emphasized as vital in making sure they can effectively utilize communication tools.
Following the discussion on communication, the board moved to accept donations for the school’s robotics team and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program. Local businesses contributed varying amounts, and the resolution to accept these donations was unanimously approved. This financial support underscores the community’s involvement in enriching educational programs.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to student achievements and recognitions. Cade Pockard, a young student, was honored for reading one thousand books before entering kindergarten. This initiative, in collaboration with the Kasson Public Library, encourages early literacy and has seen 56 students complete the challenge since its inception in 2014. Cade received a comic coin, a certificate, and a book in recognition of his accomplishment.
High school principal Trent Lang presented the Student of the Month awards for March, recognizing students’ academic and extracurricular achievements. The awardees included Audrey Peterson, Keriana Meltchure, Emma Matsik, and Berkeley Clay. Lang highlighted Berkeley’s dedication to academics and her active participation in hockey, student council, and honor societies. After graduation, Berkeley plans to pursue a nursing degree at the University of St. Thomas.
The board also celebrated the success of winter sports teams. The girls basketball team, despite an 8-20 record, achieved a remarkable cumulative GPA of 3.84, earning the academic all-state gold award. The Comets dance team also excelled academically, receiving the silver academic achievement award. In wrestling, Parker Richards was named state champion in his weight class, and Orlando became the first female wrestler from the school to place at the state level. These achievements highlight the balance between academics and athletics within the student body.
The board addressed several logistical and policy-related topics during the meeting. The construction program’s expansion plans were put on hold due to regulatory changes that increased costs. Instead, focus shifted to continuing the existing home building project. Discussion also touched on the need for improved storage solutions and renovations to the softball facilities, particularly regarding fencing.
Policy updates were another key topic, specifically concerning student fundraising and immunization record policies. The board proposed compiling a comprehensive list of fundraising activities to enhance transparency and communication among different groups within the district. Changes to immunization record policies sparked concerns about non-custodial parents’ access to these records, now categorized as school records.
The meeting concluded with logistical discussions, including audit frequencies and their implications on the district’s workload. While acknowledging the challenges posed by frequent audits, the board also recognized them as indicative of the district’s sound management. The $780,000 bond, secured at a favorable rate, will fund roof projects, with a stable debt service tax rate anticipated through 2036.
