Keansburg School Board Unveils New 911 Dispatch Program Amid ELL Educational Progress Updates
- Meeting Overview:
The Keansburg School Board meeting on January 11, 2025, highlighted significant educational initiatives, including introducing a 911 telecommunications dispatch training program, updates on the English Language Learner (ELL) program, and various infrastructure improvements funded by grants.
The introduction of a 911 telecommunications dispatch training program stood out as a development. This program aims to provide students with practical skills and career pathways in emergency services. The School Board emphasized the potential of this program to offer students valuable experience in a critical field.
Alongside this initiative, the meeting provided an in-depth look at the current state and progress of the district’s ELL program. The presentation shared comprehensive data on ELL students’ language development through annual assessments conducted from February to April. However, scores declined as students reached grades four through eight, falling to levels 2.5 to 2.6, which are categorized as “emerging.” High school students faced the most challenges, primarily due to the arrival of newcomers adapting to a new language and academic environment.
The presentation underscored the importance of community engagement and resources for ELL families, including translation services and the ESL parent advisory committee. Extended learning opportunities and after-school tutoring, supported by Title III resources, were highlighted as essential components in supporting ELL students. Additionally, the need for staff training was addressed, with approximately half of the teaching staff trained in Sheltered English Instruction. This training is important for better supporting ELL students within mainstream classrooms.
In other developments, the School Board discussed recent infrastructure improvements made possible through grants, notably without costing the district. The HRAC project at the high school was completed, and new kitchen facilities were installed. The quad areas behind the high school were mostly cleared, and further renovations included window replacements and gym floor resurfacing. These projects are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the learning environment while minimizing financial strain on the district.
The meeting also covered various educational programs and partnerships, such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses available to students through collaborations with both the Keansburg and Middletown school districts. These programs enable students to earn college credits.
Financial matters were addressed, including a detailed financial report that confirmed no line item overextensions and the availability of funds for the district’s obligations. Bills totaling over $232,000 were reviewed, and several grants were approved, including submissions for competitive educational funding.
Personnel recommendations for the upcoming school year were presented, covering resignations, employment of new staff, and roles within after-school programs. The academic law specialist position was discussed, clarifying its role in providing additional support for students in need. The board also approved general activities, transportation schedules, and a memorandum of understanding with the Middletown Township School District.
Additionally, the board addressed the disposal of outdated furniture and equipment and approved out-of-state trips for high school students. Legislative updates included a mention of the upcoming New Jersey School Boards Association delegate assembly, with resolutions needing submission by October 3.
As the meeting concluded, board members expressed their appreciation for staff efforts during summer programs and preparations for the new academic year. Congratulations were extended to Mr. Cook for his appointment to the Monmouth County Board of Directors, and well wishes were offered to students starting the new school year.
