Keansburg School Board Welcomes Therapy Dogs, Approves New Internship Location
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Keansburg School Board meeting, key topics included the implementation of therapy dogs in the high school, spearheaded by the guidance department, and the approval of a new internship location for senior students. The therapy dogs, introduced to enhance the educational environment, have been well-received, providing emotional support to students and staff. The Board also focused on the district’s financial health, personnel matters, sports achievements, and academic recognitions, including college acceptances. Additional discussions encompassed budgeting, after-school program coordinator salaries, and housekeeping items such as trip approvals and the district’s Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying report.
During the meeting, the high school representative, Gabriella Rivera, highlighted the positive impact of therapy dogs, which have been visiting weekly. The therapy dogs provide comfort and emotional support, contributing to a more conducive learning environment. The Board also approved a new internship location, expanding opportunities for senior students to gain real-world experience in their fields of interest.
In other matters, the financial committee, including Mr. Kenneth Cook and Mr. Michael Mankowski, reported the district’s sound financial status, with discussions on service contract affordability and upcoming budget agendas. Superintendent Kathleen O’Hare oversaw the approval of various personnel matters, including resignations, medical leaves, and salary revisions for after-school program coordinators.
The Board’s report also included sports updates and academic achievements. The high school’s winter sports teams are in full swing, with a young boys’ basketball team under new coach Walts and the girls’ basketball team also under new leadership. In wrestling, Dominic Tiano’s success has given the program its highest finish at the shore Conference tournament. The bowling teams are performing well, with the boys showing great potential and the girls working hard.
Academically, the meeting recognized several high school students who have received college acceptances to institutions such as Long Island University and NJIT. The Board noted the importance of these milestones for the students and the community.
Additionally, the Board addressed several housekeeping items, including the approval of minutes, trip lists, and the district’s HIB (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) report. The memorandum of agreement with law enforcement was also discussed.
