Kenilworth Appoints Jeremy Davies New Superintendent Amidst Contract Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
The Kenilworth School Board convened for a meeting where the appointment of a new superintendent, the approval of a superintendent’s contract, and the conclusion of successful negotiations with the teacher’s association were the central points of discussion. The meeting also involved deliberations on financial transfers to reserves, insurance packages, and staffing resolutions, including a removed resolution due to a last-minute change.
At the heart of the meeting was the appointment of Jeremy Davies as the new superintendent of schools, replacing the outgoing superintendent whose contract term was nearing its end. The decision to appoint Davies was met with near-unanimous support, as the board voted 8 to 1 in favor of his appointment. Prior to the vote, a board member delivered a speech lauding Davies for his leadership and accomplishments at his previous position as principal of Berley Middle High School. Davies, expressing his gratitude, showed great enthusiasm for his new role and upcoming responsibilities.
Davies’ new position comes with additional responsibilities, as he is set to also serve as the treasurer of school monies. His contract, which entails a 4-year agreement starting from July 1st, 2024, was a topic of discussion, but no objections or further questions were raised post-discussion.
The meeting continued with discussions on various financial matters. The board reviewed insurance packages and discussed the importance of student accident insurance, as well as the need for regular security drills and lead testing in school facilities.
During the deliberations, the board also tackled the topic of hiring law enforcement officers, a measure pointing towards heightened security and safety concerns within the school district.
The Personnel report brought to the fore 18 resolutions, with one being conspiculously removed from consideration due to a last-minute amendment. The resolutions addressed a range of employment-related actions, including changes to secretarial staffing, handling of resignations, transfers and reassignments of staff, new hires, stipend positions, and the staffing of summer programs.
The board also discussed the roles of Student Assistance counselors in comparison to guidance counselors, highlighting the diverse support systems available to students within the district.
Another component of the meeting was the Curriculum and Instruction report, which encompassed the approval of the McKenny Vento collaborative grant application.
In addition to these discussions, the board’s successful conclusion of negotiations with the teacher’s association was reported. While the summary did not provide details on the agreements reached, such negotiations usually involve contracts, salaries, benefits, and working conditions, which are critical for maintaining staff morale and ensuring the recruitment and retention of quality educators.
The board also had a motion to enter into closed sessions twice during the meeting, first to discuss personnel matters, the superintendent’s annual evaluation, and contract, followed by another closed session later on. During the first closed session, they deliberated on the superintendent’s appointment, which led to the aforementioned vote of 8 to 1 in favor of Mr. Davies.
