Kenilworth Borough Council Addresses Sidewalk Projects, Flooding Concerns, and Honors Library Veteran
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Kenilworth Borough Council tackled several community issues, including sidewalk improvement projects, local flooding problems, and recognized a longtime library employee for her dedication. Key decisions were made regarding infrastructure projects and community safety measures, with the council also engaging residents in discussions about ongoing environmental challenges.
One of the primary focuses of the meeting was the series of resolutions concerning infrastructure improvements. The council approved Resolution 25255, which involved a $26,000 change order for sidewalk improvements on Vernon Avenue. This resolution was part of a broader initiative to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout the borough. Another resolution, 25256, addressed the funding for sidewalk replacement on both sides of the Boulevard. This project is being financed through a combination of leftover funds from previous sidewalk projects and contributions from a gas company. The council expressed a commitment to ensuring these projects were completed efficiently, with further details to be provided as they progress.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing flooding issues in the Sherwood Road neighborhood. Residents Tom Marzac and MJ Patel voiced their concerns about persistent flooding that has been exacerbated over the past three years. Marzac detailed how light rainfall often leads to severe street flooding, affecting drivers and damaging property. Despite regularly maintaining the storm drain, the problem persists, possibly due to an underground creek affecting the water table. Patel expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the council and borough engineers regarding drainage solutions. The council acknowledged these concerns and agreed to have their engineer investigate the situation further to determine the responsibilities and potential actions needed to address the flooding.
In addition to infrastructure and environmental concerns, the council took time to honor Robin Kerner for her 30 years of service at the Kenilworth Public Library. The mayor issued a proclamation declaring December 11, 2025, as Robin Kerner Day, recognizing her contributions to community learning and literacy. Kerner’s efforts in developing various programs have had a lasting impact on both children and seniors in the community. The audience responded with applause, acknowledging her dedication and service to the borough.
Other resolutions addressed at the meeting included the renewal of shared service agreements with the borough of Roselle Park for financial and public works management services, as well as the awarding of a new IT services contract to Network Security Group. The contract was a result of the cancellation of a previous agreement due to insurance issues, and the new firm has an established relationship with Union Township.
The council also tackled recreational and community events, with announcements about the holiday house decorating contest and upcoming skating nights. These events are part of the council’s efforts to engage residents in community activities and foster a sense of togetherness during the holiday season. The fire department’s Santa’s Express initiative was also highlighted, providing families the opportunity to have gifts delivered to their homes by Santa Claus.
Towards the end of the meeting, the council discussed Ordinance 2025-14, which amends parking regulations to create a designated no-parking zone to facilitate the safe transportation of a developmentally disabled resident. The ordinance was adopted without public opposition.
