- Meeting Overview:
The recent Kenilworth School Board meeting saw the election of new leadership, a comprehensive ethics training session, and a lively public comment period where community concerns about school facilities and safety were discussed.
The meeting began with the organization of the board for the upcoming year. Michelle Panichi was elected president of the Board of Education, receiving eight votes over her opponent. Ryan Haberthur was unanimously elected as vice president. Both elections marked a reshuffle in the board’s leadership, setting the tone for the upcoming term. The newly elected members took their oaths of office following the certification of the election results, which confirmed Suzanne Koli, Joseph J. Hardina, and Michelle Panichi as the top vote-getters in the recent election.
The session reviewed the New Jersey School Ethics Act and the School Board Member Code of Ethics. Board members were reminded of their obligations to uphold laws, prioritize children’s welfare, and avoid using their positions for personal gain. The training included a discussion on conflicts of interest, emphasizing that school officials should abstain from participating in matters where their judgment could be impaired by personal or family interests.
The meeting’s public comment segment was highlighted by Randy Lechuck, who raised several issues concerning community use and safety at school facilities. He questioned why the lights at the community field and track were not activated at night. The athletic director reportedly cited budget constraints for not implementing this change, prompting Lechuck to call for clarification and a resolution to the issue.
Lechuck also expressed concern about parking violations in fire lanes at the schools, particularly during student pickup times. He noted that the lack of enforcement and removal of deterrent cones had led to unsafe conditions, which could potentially hinder emergency services. He urged the board to address these safety concerns by reinstating measures to prevent improper parking.
Additionally, Lechuck raised questions about a school construction project, voicing confusion over the allocation of space within the new building. He was concerned that too much of the space appeared to be designated for administrative purposes rather than student classrooms. The board president acknowledged Lechuck’s concerns and committed to investigating the visibility issue on social media regarding a related post, as well as further discussing the construction concerns.
The board subsequently moved to resolutions on various administrative and financial matters, including bylaws, meeting schedules, and the appointment of legal counsel. A particular focus was given to the review of textbooks and curriculum standards. A clarification was provided regarding textbook adoption dates, affirming that the listed dates referred to when the board approved the textbooks, not their publication dates.
