Kenilworth School Board Celebrates Esports Achievements and Plans for New Principal
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Kenilworth School Board meeting, the esports program at David Brley was spotlighted for its growing success and impact on student engagement, while updates were provided on the search for a new principal at Brley High School. The meeting also included discussions on school policies, facility improvements, and community involvement.
The esports program took center stage as the board commended the achievements of the David Brley esports team. Superintendent Jeremy Davies expressed his initial skepticism about the program but acknowledged its role in fostering teamwork and communication skills among students. The team, coached by Mr. Rosetti and Miss Galina, has been active for the past four years, with students regularly practicing from Tuesday to Thursday in preparation for state tournaments.
Miss Galina shared insights into the team’s journey and training regimen. Students like Damen Grabowski and Joseph Pizaro detailed their experiences in the Fall Championships and current season, emphasizing the esports program’s parallels to traditional sports in terms of team dynamics and competitive spirit.
The board was particularly enthusiastic about the program’s potential to lead to college scholarships and noted that the school now awards varsity letters in esports. This recognition is on par with traditional sports, requiring students to participate at the varsity level for two years and play in at least 75% of the matches.
Approximately 15 to 20 students are involved in esports, with participation peaking during the winter season. The program’s governing body, Garden State Esports (GSC), has facilitated its growth, especially after the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association opted out of managing esports. The board viewed this independence as an opportunity for the program to flourish, with optimism about its future prospects.
Updates on other school activities were provided by student representative Katie Lima, who reported on the success of various winter sports teams, including the wrestling and basketball teams, as well as extracurricular achievements like the annual winter concert and a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The search for a new principal at Brley High School was another focal point of the meeting. The superintendent reported that 40 applications had been received, with a rigorous screening and interview process underway. The goal is to appoint a new principal by February 9th, with expectations for them to start in mid-April. This search is part of the district’s broader efforts to enhance leadership and support educational excellence.
The meeting also addressed the implementation of a new cell phone ban law signed by the governor, which aligns with existing policies at Harding and David Brley Middle School. The law, which restricts phone use during classes at the high school level, is anticipated to guide further policy enforcement, pending specific guidelines from the commissioner of education.
In discussions about school behavior, it was noted that the creation of a dedicated middle school with its own principal has positively impacted student conduct, particularly in grades six through eight. The absence of reported HIB incidents in December was attributed to the community’s support for the middle school referendum.
The finance committee reported on the review of the upcoming fiscal year’s budget and various resolutions concerning facility projects. Notable projects include new pickleball courts, fencing, and playground upgrades, all aimed at enhancing the district’s recreational facilities.
In personnel matters, the board discussed staff changes, including the resignation of a Harding School aide and the appointment of a volunteer wrestling coach. The curriculum instruction committee presented resolutions on a revised school calendar and policy updates.
