Kenilworth School Board Discusses Safety Initiatives and Brings Back Local Fireworks
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Kenilworth School Board, members discussed topics, including the district’s safety data and the return of the local fireworks celebration to its original location.
The meeting commenced with Superintendent Kyle C. Arlington highlighting two significant reports: the WIDA Access Report and the School Safety Data Systems (SSDS) report. The WIDA Access Report detailed the performance of English language learners (ELLs) in the district, showing that the average scores across grade levels were below the 4.5 proficiency threshold required for exiting the ELL program. Despite the averages, some students successfully exited the program.
The SSDS report presented data on restraints, violent incidents, vandalism, substance use, and other safety concerns within the schools. Notably, the number of restraints and training programs has decreased, reflecting completed trainings and improved safety protocols. Superintendent Arlington emphasized that while violent incidents are down, the district continues to address substance use issues, a challenge faced by many high schools nationwide. The increase in confirmed HIB (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) cases was attributed to thorough investigations.
Another notable discussion revolved around the return of the local fireworks celebration to its original location near the school. The board members confirmed that safety concerns, which had previously necessitated moving the event to Blackbrook Park, have been adequately addressed. The fireworks will now be launched from a location closer to the school but farther from the field to protect the newly installed turf. The community will have access to the home bleachers for viewing, and additional safety measures, such as post-event roof inspections, have been planned. The event will also feature food trucks.
In personnel matters, the board approved various resolutions, including the hiring of new teachers, an interim assistant principal, and the conversion of a part-time kindergarten teacher to full-time status due to increased enrollment. Additionally, the board passed resolutions for co-curricular stipends, substitute staff approvals, and updates to job descriptions for new roles such as substitute coordinator and robotics club advisors.
The board also discussed the upcoming negotiations with the aides, secretaries, and maintenance crew, scheduled for September 10th, with a goal to finalize agreements by the end of the month.
Under new business, the board mentioned the governor’s new literacy initiative, which is expected to bring new guidance, funding, and curriculum requirements. The board expressed excitement about the initiative and looked forward to welcoming everyone back for the new school year.
