Kenilworth School Board Initiates 2026 with Leadership Elections and Ethics Training
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Kenilworth School Board meeting, developments included the election of new board leadership, the swearing-in of newly elected members, and comprehensive ethics training. These proceedings set the stage for the board’s activities in 2026, emphasizing transparency and governance integrity.
The meeting commenced with the certification of the November 2025 election results. Vincent A. Gonnella, the Business Administrator/Board Secretary, confirmed that Robert Beiner, Anthony Laudati, and Allison Tears were elected to three-year terms, expiring on December 31, 2028. Following the certification, the oath of office was administered, where each member pledged to uphold the Constitutions of the United States and New Jersey, committing to perform their duties impartially.
The board then proceeded to elect its leadership. Dr. Michelle Panichi was unanimously elected as president, while Ryan Haberthur secured the vice presidency, despite his absence due to a family commitment. This leadership transition aims to guide the board as it tackles the challenges and priorities of the upcoming year.
One part of the meeting was the detailed ethics training for board members, fulfilling an annual obligation under state statute. The training reviewed the School Ethics Act, specifically NJSA 18A12-24, which outlines the prohibitions on school officials’ business interests that may conflict with their responsibilities. It emphasized the necessity for board members to avoid any personal gain from their positions, abstain from accepting gifts that could influence their decisions, and recuse themselves in instances involving personal or familial interests. The training highlighted the expanded definition of “immediate family” and underscored the doctrine of necessity, which permits the board to carry out essential functions in the face of conflicts, contingent upon proper disclosure.
The session also addressed indemnification. This assurance is intended to allow board members to perform their roles without fear of personal financial liability.
Subsequent updates from the administration included the successful opening of two new pre-kindergarten classrooms, accommodating 30 preschoolers, an initiative made possible by a recently approved referendum.
Dr. Panichi offered insights into the strategic planning process finalized in December. The leadership team is currently developing actionable plans based on community feedback, with an anticipated presentation to the board once these plans are ready. Additionally, Dr. Panichi addressed the need to amend the school calendar to synchronize half days for middle and high school students around midterm exams.
During the public comment segment, a community member, Tony Gardaniano Perno, praised the board’s dedication and acknowledged the collaborative efforts towards improving educational opportunities.
The meeting concluded with the board unanimously passing 18 resolutions. No separate votes were requested.
