Kenilworth School Board Unveils New Math Curriculum, Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Kenilworth School Board meeting, significant initiatives were discussed, including the introduction of a new math curriculum spanning pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and the celebration of student accomplishments such as Eagle Scout achievements and impressive Advanced Placement (AP) scores. The meeting also covered updates on referendum projects and addressed questions about state funding challenges.
The most prominent topic of the meeting was the introduction of a comprehensive new math curriculum aimed at improving foundational skills across all grade levels. The curriculum will be implemented in elementary and middle schools, with extended periods for English Language Arts (ELA) and math incorporated into the schedules for grades six, seven, and eight, to allow for differentiated instruction. In high school, the board plans to continue using the Reveal program, with an emphasis on aligning assessments to better support student learning.
The board stressed the importance of fostering strong parent-teacher relationships and recognized the need to bridge the disconnect between current math teaching methods and the way parents learned math. Plans include surveying parents to tailor engagement initiatives, potentially involving monthly meetings and tutorials on teaching strategies. The board acknowledged that not all approaches work for every family.
The discussion also touched on the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJ GPA) and the challenges it presents. The NJ GPA, in place since 2019, assesses graduation readiness in ELA and math for 11th graders. The board noted that while 80% of students were deemed graduation ready in ELA, only 47% were ready in math, prompting an emphasis on improving math education. The impact of the pandemic on learning was also highlighted, with the 2023 results serving as a new baseline.
In a celebratory segment, the board recognized Kyle Nicholas for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Kyle’s project involved installing a bike repair station at Harding School, which he chose to provide a resource to the community. His project demonstrated leadership and received community support, with volunteers aiding in its execution. Kyle also shared his future plans to attend Louisiana State University, expressing ambitions to start his own business.
The board celebrated the success of students in Advanced Placement (AP) courses, noting that 94% of students who took AP exams scored a three or above. The board discussed plans to reintroduce AP Biology, reflecting student interest in science courses, and emphasized the importance of maintaining high expectations for AP enrollment while ensuring adequate preparation for students.
Updates on referendum projects were presented, with details on construction progress and facility enhancements. Preparations for the upcoming school year were reported as on track, with completed installations of glazing, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work. The board expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting improvements such as the new gym floor and auditorium upgrades.
The meeting also addressed challenges related to state funding, particularly a reduction in grant coverage for site improvements. The board expressed disappointment over the timing of the funding announcement, which limited strategic adjustments during the budgeting process. Discussions on potential enrollment impacts and state regulations were noted, with concerns about how these might affect district operations.
The personnel and management segment introduced resolutions related to staffing for the new school year, including the hiring of a new middle school science teacher and the approval of co-curricular and athletic stipends. The board affirmed its use of the Stron evaluation system, which has positively impacted feedback and communication between administrators and staff.
