In addition to funding decisions, the board received an update from Chief Holmes regarding the police department’s staffing and facilities. Two new recruits have commenced training at the Plymouth municipal police academy. The department is also seeking to secure a US Department of Justice Cops Hiring Program Grant, which would aid in partially funding these new positions. The timing of this grant is critical, with a submission deadline in mid-July and a decision expected by fall.

Chief Holmes further detailed the challenges surrounding the search for a new police station location. Previous plans to partner with Eversource for property use were unsuccessful, prompting ongoing efforts to identify either a town-owned site or a cost-effective alternative. This issue remains unresolved, with the department exploring creative solutions to accommodate a new station at its current location on Main Street.

An additional highlight from Chief Holmes’ report was the department’s engagement in community activities, such as staffing support for the FIFA World Cup at Gillette Stadium and the DARE camp, which had 12 Kingston participants last year. The department is also enhancing its visibility through initiatives like police mountain bike training and motorcycle training, which involve collaboration with neighboring departments.

The board also examined legal counsel options, particularly its longstanding relationship with the law firm Mead, Talerman, and Costa. While there was general satisfaction with the firm’s services, board members expressed the importance of periodically evaluating all service positions to ensure quality and competitiveness. This discussion included the potential benefits of engaging specialized attorneys for specific areas rather than maintaining a solely general counsel.

A temporary road closure was approved for Green Street to accommodate a proclamation ceremony organized by the 300th Anniversary Committee.
