Kingston Library Explores Policy Changes Amid Staffing Shifts and Facility Updates
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Kingston Board of Selectmen meeting, the library’s tutoring policy came under scrutiny, while staffing shifts and facility updates were also topics of discussion. The library’s administration is considering revisions to its tutoring policy, which currently allows tutors to use specific areas within the library, such as the art gallery hallway and children’s room. The policy prohibits tutoring in the teen room and adult reference area. Concerns were raised about the adequacy of the current first-come, first-served system, especially during peak tutoring periods. The potential legal implications of viewing tutoring as a business activity on municipal property were also noted. The board plans to revisit the policy, which hasn’t been revised since 2018.
In a related staffing update, the library has filled the teen and emerging technology librarian position with a candidate set to start in October. Meanwhile, the library technician role attracted substantial interest, with 41 applications received. Interviews are ongoing for this position, which requires availability for evening and weekend shifts. The resignation of Holly, the head of youth services, was also acknowledged. The Human Resources department is revising job descriptions for various positions to ensure they meet current needs and expectations.
Facility updates were another focal point of the meeting. The LED sign, which has faced operational challenges, is undergoing improvements. A site visit by the sign company has initiated the process of measuring panels and 3D-printing holders. Weatherproofing measures are planned to protect the wiring, with a completion timeline of up to two months. Maintenance concerns persist, as the sign’s issues have affected community event advertising opportunities. Funding for repairs has been secured. Additional discussions covered the repair of chipped concrete steps leading to the Adam Center and the status of plantings around the Eversource box, with delays in communication noted.
The director’s report highlighted the submission of the financial report to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Attention was also drawn to the condition of the children’s room, where high traffic has led to coping and staining issues. Despite cleaning attempts, the problems persist, prompting consideration of ongoing maintenance costs. The electric vehicle station has experienced intermittent circuit breaker issues, but resolutions are anticipated soon.
Program planning is underway for the upcoming book and treat event, in collaboration with the recreation department. Recent challenges with Amazon have been resolved, allowing for the resumption of orders for video games and supplies. Library usage statistics revealed an increase in Hoopla usage during July and August, with August usage peaking at $1,746. This spike is attributed to seasonal trends and possibly increased access through school accounts.
