Kingston Prepares for Grand 300th Anniversary Celebration Amid Historical and Community Preservation Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Kingston Board of Selectmen meeting, the agenda was dominated by discussions surrounding Kingston’s upcoming 300th-anniversary celebrations, deeply intertwined with initiatives aimed at preserving the town’s historical heritage.
Central to the meeting was the robust planning for Kingston’s 300th-anniversary festivities, set to commence with a gala on January 31st at the trading post. The event lineup includes a potential gathering in November, an art festival in May, and a parade on July 25th, with community participation being a key focus. The anniversary’s highlight may very well be the dedication of a memorial for Revolutionary War soldiers, reflecting Kingston’s deep historical roots. The organizing committee has worked diligently to ensure that each event not only celebrates the town’s history but also engages various civic groups and neighborhoods, promising a vibrant commemoration.
A point of discussion was the potential proclamation from the governor. This date was chosen despite historical significance attached to June 16th.
Conversations extended beyond celebratory events to focus on the preservation of Kingston’s historical sites. An update was provided on the tree removal project at the Old Burying Ground, aimed at enhancing visibility and protecting graves. Despite delays caused by weather and underestimation of time, the project continues with careful attention to preserving the integrity of the burial sites.
The meeting also addressed the Community Preservation Act (CPA) applications, with proposals for restoring the historic cemetery’s iron gates and repairing gravestones.
In addition, a portion of the meeting was dedicated to the 300th book project, a comprehensive publication documenting Kingston’s history. The project is nearing completion, slated to go to print by mid-November, with a launch event planned for December 3rd at the Font School. Funding challenges persist, with an estimated need for an additional $2,000 to $3,000 to cover final costs. The book, priced at $55, aims to offer nearly 400 pages of historical insight.
Also on the agenda was the contentious history of a proposed historic district, which faced significant opposition, leading to its abandonment. Concerns regarding property modifications and community involvement were highlighted, with a call for clarity and education on such proposals in the future.
Lastly, the meeting touched upon the condition of Kingston’s signage, with damaged signs documented for repair. Efforts to promote the availability of official Kingston sign boards at reduced prices were discussed, alongside considerations for improving advertising strategies through digital platforms.
