Kingston Residents Voice Housing Concerns in Age-Friendly Community Survey
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Kingston Council on Aging Advisory Board meeting, a community survey highlighted housing as the primary concern for aging residents, revealing significant challenges related to affordability, availability, and accessibility. This meeting addressed these issues in detail, alongside discussions about transportation, community involvement, and the introduction of potential new board members.
One notable topics discussed was a community survey conducted by the dementia working group in partnership with the Oolony Planning Council. The survey garnered 516 responses. Housing emerged as the top concern, with 44% of respondents prioritizing it above other areas like communication and information. Many participants expressed apprehension about the lack of affordable, suitable housing options, which poses a substantial barrier to aging in place. This concern is compounded by a lack of awareness about available services and resources, emphasizing the need for improved information dissemination.
The survey also highlighted transportation as an issue, reflecting Kingston’s reliance on cars. Respondents criticized the pedestrian and cyclist conditions, noting inadequate sidewalks, benches, and unsafe cycling environments. Although access to healthcare services was rated positively due to proximity, many residents were unclear about available local services, particularly for in-home care and mental health support.
Social participation and respect for older residents were other focal points of the survey. While many respondents felt socially connected, about one-fifth experienced loneliness or isolation. Employment opportunities for older adults received a lukewarm response. Communication about job and volunteer opportunities was highlighted as a challenge.
The meeting also addressed the ongoing efforts of the Friends of the Kingston Council on Aging, a 501c3 organization, which has been active in fundraising and supporting various initiatives. The representatives emphasized their past successes, such as cultural programs and holiday events, and discussed future plans, including an annual meeting and board elections. They encouraged community participation and highlighted the need for continued support for their activities, including gift shop and cookbook sales.
A new candidate, Melissa Clemens, expressed interest in joining the Advisory Board. With a background as a registered nurse and personal experience with aging parents, Clemens articulated her commitment to assisting the elderly population. The board members expressed enthusiasm for her potential contributions, particularly in raising awareness and education about aging and dementia-related issues.
The advisory board also deliberated on the limitations of their role, highlighting that they serve as advisors rather than decision-makers. They emphasized the importance of staying informed about community needs, particularly concerning transportation services. This led to suggestions about inviting relevant representatives to future meetings to provide clarity on essential services.
In staff committee reports, the director recapped recent events and activities at the senior center, including various classes and a new fitness program aimed at enhancing well-being. The introduction of a new town nurse for regular blood pressure clinics and the expansion of the triad program, in collaboration with local law enforcement, were noted as developments. The senior center’s café served over 4,000 meals in the past year, with a specific mention of a holiday luncheon that catered to a large group.
Transportation services were another key focus, with the director presenting outreach statistics and highlighting the provision of over 3,500 no-cost rides to seniors in the previous year. The hiring of a new van driver and acquisition of a new passenger van were seen as positive steps in enhancing transportation offerings.
