Lacey School Board Discusses Superintendent Search, Policy Updates, and Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Lacey School Board meeting, the board focused on several issues, including the ongoing search for a new superintendent, updates to key policies, and recognition of student achievements. The board is engaged in selecting a superintendent, with three finalists identified from an initial pool of 22 candidates. Policy updates were also a major focus, with revisions to address student eligibility, grievance processes, and a new spectator code of conduct for athletic events. Additionally, the board celebrated student accomplishments, highlighting the successes of the district’s students and the dedication of its educators.
39:05The search for a new superintendent took center stage as the board detailed their collaboration with the Onan Company to facilitate the process. The initial candidate pool of 22 has been narrowed to three finalists, who will be presented to the board on March 6 for further evaluation. This search marks a new venture for the board, as they have not previously engaged a corporation for such a task. The superintendent emphasized the importance of community feedback and urged public participation in the upcoming referendum on March 11, highlighting the need for voter engagement and the dissemination of accurate information.
Policy updates were another critical area of discussion. The board reviewed Policy 5111, which governs the eligibility of resident and non-resident students. The policy is being revised to prevent the admission of non-resident students without tuition and to expand the tuition program to include grades K through 2. This change ensures that all grades, aside from preschool, will accept tuition as space allows. Policy 5710, concerning the student grievance process, is also being refined to provide clearer guidelines on handling grievances, while a new Policy 9163 introduces a spectator code of conduct for interscholastic events, aligning with NJIAA requirements.
The board’s consideration of Policy 2365, an initiative focused on artificial intelligence, highlights their commitment to integrating emerging technologies into educational settings. The policy is currently under development by a school-based committee, which is also crafting updates to the cell phone and academic integrity policies.
18:44During the public comment section, a representative from the Lacey Teachers Association (LTA) reported on the success of securing over $42,000 in grants through the NJAA PEP and FAST programs. These grants fund events such as Fajitas and FAFSA nights and a Veterans Day breakfast, all designed to enhance family engagement and community relations without financial burden to the district. The representative expressed gratitude for the board’s support and emphasized the significance of these grants in promoting educational success and community involvement.
0:02Student achievements were prominently recognized throughout the meeting. Two “unsung heroes” were celebrated for their contributions: Erica Dolfinger, noted for her positivity and involvement in multiple clubs, and Ezra Tandola, lauded for his academic excellence and sports participation. Additionally, Haley Miller and Shane O’Neal were honored as “Seniors of the Month” for their leadership and aspirations in fields such as design and technology, and cybersecurity, respectively.
The board also commended the achievements of middle school students Victoria Branck and Cole Leedum, who earned placements in the South Jersey region honors band. The results of the 42nd annual science fair were shared, with Natalie McGovern recognized as the grand champion for her project on microbiological activity’s impact on pollution and climate change.
In the realm of energy management, the board received a report on the district’s partnership with Synergistic, which has resulted in a notable reduction in utility costs despite rising electricity rates. The district’s energy management efforts, credited with achieving Energy Star certification for five out of six school buildings, were applauded for their effectiveness and collaborative approach involving the energy manager and maintenance staff.
