- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Lacey School Board meeting, discussions took precedence over routine matters, with the district’s self-assessment of its harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) policy and the proposed 9.9% tax increase to support the school budget drawing attention. The self-assessment yielded scores between 73 and 75 out of 78 for each school, resulting in an overall district grade of 73. Meanwhile, board members debated the tax increase’s necessity to maintain smaller classrooms and avoid staffing cuts against the impact on homeowners, renters, and businesses.
The board recognized the end of the school year by acknowledging student achievements, including high school graduation and scholarship recipients. Commendations were given to the teachers of the year from Lacey Township High School, middle school, and Cedar Creek, as well as the recipients of the Lacey Township High School Performing Arts Boosters Association scholarship.
The meeting also celebrated the retirement of a board member and presented an award to a staff member. Teachers and paraprofessionals were recognized for their contributions, and a video presentation honored staff members for their achievements. Additionally, the board noted the challenges posed by recent weather conditions at the elementary schools.
During public comments, a range of topics was covered. Concerns were raised about the lack of recognition for Performing Arts students and the need for improved communication regarding tax increases. The issue of transparency in communication and financial matters was debated, with community members calling for clearer information dissemination and more inclusive decision-making. A lack of awareness of public meetings, the absence of a memorial in the yearbook for a deceased student, and the behavior of district employees at previous meetings were also discussed.
Linda Miller raised concerns about the inconvenient timing of meetings for working individuals, while Nick Spaltro suggested merging with other districts as a solution to financial challenges. Mr. Bidnick commented on the declining student population and called for more transparency on employee salaries and benefits. Lisa Edgeworth apologized for previous remarks and reiterated her concern for the community. The availability of the Beacon newspaper and a contract with Barnegat for a hockey program were mentioned, as well as pay-to-play or cooperative options for gymnastics.
In the curriculum report, the removal of “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” from the text materials list for the 2024-2025 school year was announced. Discussions included credit recovery for high school students, a proposed financial literacy online course, and various school trips and events. Technology updates included the replacement of Chromebooks and maintenance plans.
The Finance Committee addressed the budget, benefits renewals, and insurance matters. The superintendent expressed appreciation for community support in sending letters to Trenton and quoted Theodore Roosevelt. Board members shared comments on scholarship recipients, teachers of the year, and staff members of the month. They also debated the impact of tax increases on the community and the urgency to provide security for teachers.
One board member visited a community affected by reduced state funding, leading to support for the tax increase to avoid further cuts. The importance of school spirit and the desire to facilitate the awarding of varsity letters for various activities were also discussed.
