Lacey Town Council Approves Key Ordinances for Affordable Housing and Interlocal Agreements
- Meeting Overview:
In the recent Lacey Town Council meeting, the approval of several ordinances related to affordable housing and interlocal agreements took center stage. The council made strides in addressing housing and community safety needs.
The meeting’s most development was the council’s approval of three ordinances aimed at enhancing affordable housing compliance and community infrastructure. The first reading of Ordinance 202602, which amends Chapter 335 regarding zoning, was unanimously approved. This ordinance is part of a broader effort to meet the fourth-round requirements of the fair share housing settlement. Following this, Ordinance 202603, which amends Chapter 127 regarding the affordable housing program, also received unanimous approval. Additionally, Ordinance 202604, concerning amendments to Chapter 211 related to land development fees, was passed without opposition.
The council also approved several interlocal services agreements. Resolution 202681 authorized an agreement with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office to support a fatal accident team, while Resolution 202682 established a similar agreement for a regional SWAT team.
In addition to legislative matters, the council addressed various administrative and community issues. A series of resolutions concerning municipal employee matters were passed, including the acceptance of a retirement, authorization of leave extensions, and approval of refunds for municipal facility deposits.
The meeting also featured updates on community engagement and public safety efforts. Deputy Mayor Steven Kennis expressed gratitude for attending the Ocean County Fire Academy’s graduation ceremony, noting the graduation of four Lacey residents. Similarly, a council member highlighted the graduation of 19 EMTs from the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, acknowledging the need for volunteers in emergency services and the county’s efforts to address this demand.
The council member also voiced concerns about New Jersey’s affordability, referencing the state’s ranking and average tax bill. They emphasized the need to manage expenditures carefully, particularly given the impact on seniors and residents with fixed incomes. This commentary reflects ongoing challenges in balancing fiscal responsibility with community needs.
Further discussions touched on recent storm responses, with commendations for the Department of Public Works (DPW) for their efforts during adverse weather conditions. The DPW’s work during a sudden transition from snow to ice was particularly noted.
The meeting also explored potential developments on the power plant property, with discussions about a battery storage system and updates from JCP&L regarding electrical infrastructure upgrades.
In budget discussions, a council member candidly described the challenges of aligning community needs with available financial resources. They noted the absence of recycling income due to market fluctuations, highlighting an ongoing issue impacting the township’s financial management. This conversation underscores the complexities of municipal budgeting and the necessity of strategic planning to ensure fiscal sustainability.
