Lacey Town Council Discusses Wildlife Safety and Infrastructure Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The Lacey Town Council meeting covered a range of topics, including wildlife safety concerns due to power line-related swan fatalities, infrastructure upgrades by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), and community engagement through holiday events and public facilities enhancements. The council also addressed public comments about meeting accessibility and the coordination required for municipal storm preparations.
A resident raised concerns about the threat posed to local wildlife by power lines, particularly after recent incidents where swans were fatally injured, causing power outages. The council was urged to consider installing bird diverters on electrical lines to prevent such occurrences. The resident underscored the potential for these devices to minimize both bird fatalities and associated power disruptions, calling for improved collaboration with utility providers to safeguard wildlife while maintaining reliable power services. The council members acknowledged the issue, reflecting the community’s growing concern for wildlife preservation and safety, though no immediate resolutions were proposed.
The meeting also included discussions on the ongoing infrastructure projects by JCP&L, which are expected to cost $12 million by 2028. These projects are part of an effort to enhance the township’s power grid reliability and include the installation of bird diverters, relevant to the earlier wildlife safety discussion. The council noted the importance of these upgrades for the community’s long-term energy stability.
A separate discussion highlighted the challenges of maintaining cleanliness along Route 9, a state highway, where litter and debris management are complicated by government regulations. The difficulties in dealing with animal carcass removal were also addressed, with frustration expressed over the bureaucracy involved in what appear to be straightforward tasks.
In another community engagement effort, the Lacey Lights holiday light decorating contest was celebrated during the meeting. The contest, now in its ninth year, saw participation from 47 households, with 2,200 votes cast. The Weman family secured first place with their elaborate display on Lane Drive. Their year-round preparation and future plans for expansion were shared humorously, with discussions about the extensive number of lights used and the associated electric bill.
The council also approved a request from Lacy Girl Softball to dedicate a field at Gilly Park in honor of Peter Miles, the organization’s founder. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for April 18, with all related costs covered by Lacy Girl Softball. Additionally, a resident’s proposal for a seasonal memorial Christmas tree at Bayfront Park was approved. The tree, funded and managed by the resident, will be on display from November 23 to January 5.
Public comments further addressed meeting accessibility, with suggestions to reschedule meetings to later in the evening to better accommodate working residents. Despite the acknowledgment of this concern, the council debated the impact of meeting times on attendance, emphasizing the availability of broadcasts and email for community engagement.
The meeting also included updates on municipal operations, such as employee resignations, department transfers, and appointments to the Municipal Utilities Authority. There were committee comments on storm preparations, with advisories for residents to keep streets clear for emergency access and coordination efforts to support vulnerable community members during severe weather.
Mayor McDonald emphasized the need for residents to prepare for the impending storm, advising completion of necessary shopping and sharing a personal story to highlight the importance of keeping vehicles off the streets. He also reminded residents, particularly the elderly, to be cautious when shoveling snow to prevent health risks.
