- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Lacey Town Council addressed multiple issues including community disagreements over park maintenance, approval of a significant fire equipment bond ordinance, and concerns about neighborhood safety.
The most contentious topic was the debate over the maintenance practices at Forked River Bayfront Park and other local parks. Several residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the current vegetation management strategy, which they argue negatively affects the park’s ecological health and aesthetic value. Laura Schletch, a resident, criticized the mowing practices that she claims harm pollinators and erosion control. She pointed out that cutting native plants like the groundsel bush and fragmites grass undermines their role in stabilizing the soil and supporting local wildlife, such as the Eastern Monarch butterfly.
In response to these concerns, a council member defended the mowing, emphasizing that it was done responsibly and only twice that year. They argued that overgrowth obstructs paths, posing risks for turtles and potential legal issues for the township due to visibility concerns. Despite this defense, Schletch and others, including Kelly Spankowski, remained firm in their stance that the mowing was excessive and detrimental to the park’s environmental integrity.
The discussion touched on balancing community desires for clear views with the environmental necessity of maintaining biodiversity. This tension was further highlighted by Bob Shling, who appreciated the park improvements but insisted on the need for safety measures due to unregulated bike riding and potential hazards from overgrowth.
Another notable issue was the acceptance of a significant bond ordinance for acquiring a new fire truck and related equipment. The ordinance, which totaled $1,500,000 with $1,425,000 to be issued in bonds, was unanimously approved by the council.
Additionally, the council approved several resolutions, including a $30,000 agreement with the County of Ocean for street sweeping and a $46,900 Federal Highway Safety Grant to promote safe transportation. The appointment of Aaron Collins as the Public Safety Telecommunicator Coordinator was also confirmed, aimed at enhancing communication within emergency services.
The meeting also delved into local safety concerns, particularly regarding parking issues related to ongoing construction on Calvin Street. Residents expressed worries about the safety hazards posed by parked vehicles limiting visibility and increasing traffic risks. The council acknowledged these concerns and mentioned possible consultations with an engineer to assess the feasibility of establishing no-parking zones.
Public comments further highlighted frustrations with park maintenance policies, with some residents criticizing overgrown vegetation that obstructs views and poses safety hazards. Donna Broy specifically recounted an incident where a child was injured due to dense vegetation, advocating for better maintenance practices that balance ecological needs with public safety.
Concerns about the historic Warden House were also raised, with residents seeking better access and maintenance to preserve its historical significance. One resident, Barry Bender, voiced frustration over the removal of identifying signage and emphasized the importance of respecting the town’s heritage.
