Lake Como Borough Council Approves $5.1 Million Budget for 2026 Amid Public Inquiry
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session, the Lake Como Borough Council approved a $5.1 million budget for the fiscal year 2026, alongside discussions about community events and infrastructure concerns, all while addressing public inquiries about tax implications and school funding.
The council’s approval of the 2026 budget, totaling approximately $5.1 million, marks a notable increase of $250,000 from the previous year. The decision followed a public hearing where council members provided insight into the municipal tax bill’s composition, including school and county taxes. While the county budget remains pending, it was noted that school taxes are expected to remain stable, a positive indication for residents. This stability contrasts with the slight increase in the county open space tax rate, following a referendum that passed by a significant margin of 500 to 259 votes. This increase from 0.025 to 0.032 will be reflected in the residents’ tax bills.
During the public hearing, resident Bob Rossby raised questions about the school budget’s basis, particularly the influence of student numbers. The council explained their consultation with the Lake Como and Belmar school boards, detailing how the decreasing number of students affects tuition payments to Belmar. However, despite the decline, Manisquan maintains steady funding requests, reflecting differing budget calculation methods between districts. The council emphasized that the budgetary process for schools lies with the Board of Education, which considers various factors, including the needs of special education students, whose costs can impact financial allocations.
The council also addressed public concerns about the selection process for schools, highlighting that elementary students typically attend Belmar, while high school placements vary, influenced by factors such as the timing of a family’s move to the area. Alternative options, like magnet and choice schools, add complexity to the selection process.
Following the budget approval, the council moved on to several resolutions, including a refund of overpaid taxes to a resident and various financial payments, all of which were unanimously approved. The session also saw the council sitting as the Alcohol Beverage Control Board to address liquor license renewals and concerns about local establishments. Discussions highlighted delays in the opening of a store due to pending work and coordination with state authorities for compliance. Additionally, the council approved the renewal of licenses for Weinstein’s Liquor, Coral 2, McCann’s Tavern, and Lo Sierra Restaurant, addressing conditions like staff training and litter patrols.
In other discussions, the council addressed the governor’s moratorium on new floodplain regulations, a issue for Lake Como. The mayor highlighted a collaborative letter signed by mayors, urging the state to reconsider these regulations, which impact shore communities. The moratorium provides additional time for data analysis and discussion.
Community engagement was also a focal point, with announcements of upcoming events. Councilwoman Albalid Doyle outlined initiatives to boost tourism, including a fundraiser for Lake Como Day at Joe’s Surf Shack and the commencement of the farmers market and “Wednesdays on the Water” events. Environmental awareness was underscored by planned recycling presentations and lake cleanup efforts organized by the Environmental Commission.
The council’s approval of the special events permit for the third annual Greenwood block party exemplified their support for community activities. The event’s logistics, including maintaining one-way traffic and emergency access, were clarified by a representative.
