Lake Como Considers Selling Water Infrastructure Amid Resident Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Lake Como Borough Council meeting, members addressed the potential sale of the town’s water infrastructure, which emerged as a point of interest. Residents expressed skepticism and concern over the possibility of selling the infrastructure to American Water, questioning the implications for water bills and the necessity of the sale. The meeting also covered a range of ordinances, including stormwater control amendments and fire inspection fee changes, as well as resolutions on a Deputy Municipal Registrar appointment and participation in the Cops in Shops program.
The discussion of the water infrastructure sale took precedence in the meeting, as public comments reflected residents’ apprehension. A resident named Steve R. sought clarity on the topics listed under new business, particularly the consideration of selling the town’s water infrastructure.
While the sale of the water infrastructure was a focal point, the council also moved through several ordinances without notable public input or council objections. Ordinance 2024-25, aimed at aligning the Borough’s stormwater control regulations with updated state management rules, was presented. Ordinance 2024-3 proposed amendments to fire inspection fees for non-life hazardous uses, and ordinance 2024-4 sought to authorize third-party pay distribution for the borough’s administration. Each ordinance underwent a second reading and public hearing, but no public comments were made.
Beyond ordinances, the council tackled resolutions concerning the functioning and services of the borough. They appointed a Deputy Municipal Registrar and discussed the borough’s participation in the state’s Cops in Shops program, which is designed to prevent underage drinking. Additionally, a contract was awarded for the installation of a pole barn.
As part of the borough’s administrative housekeeping, the council addressed the certification of the annual audit and the status of a corrective action plan related to the 2022 Municipal audit report. The adoption of a memorandum of understanding regarding emergency medical services was also on the agenda.
