Lake Como Council Appoints New Member Amid Efforts to Tackle Snowstorm Aftermath
- Meeting Overview:
The Lake Como Borough Council recently convened to address several issues, including the appointment of Shannon McIntyre to fill a vacant council seat, their response to a severe snowstorm, and budgetary considerations for environmental initiatives. The meeting also covered resolutions on financial matters and planning board appointments, with attention given to the management of snow removal and enforcement of sidewalk clearing ordinances.
The meeting commenced with the swearing-in of Shannon McIntyre, who was selected unanimously to fill the council seat vacated by a former member. McIntyre, recommended by the Lake Democrats, took her oath of office in the presence of her family, committing to uphold the Constitution and fulfill her duties impartially. This appointment was a notable event.
Among notable matters discussed was the council’s response to a recent snowstorm that had impacted the borough. The Department of Public Works (DPW) received widespread commendation from council members for their efficient handling of the storm’s aftermath. Despite being short-staffed, the DPW managed to clear the roads promptly, earning praise from both residents and council members. The community expressed their gratitude through various channels, including social media and direct communications with the borough.
In light of the storm, the mayor highlighted the importance of adhering to the borough’s ordinances regarding snow removal, specifically the requirement for residents to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours post-storm. Although a grace period was initially provided due to the severity of the storm, tickets were eventually issued to those who failed to comply. The mayor stressed the need for vigilance as additional snow was forecasted in the coming week, urging residents to follow alternate side parking rules and clear sidewalks promptly.
The council also addressed environmental initiatives, with discussions on pursuing a sustainability certificate through Sustainable Jersey. This initiative, spearheaded by the Environmental Commission, aims to unlock potential grant funding for the borough’s environmental projects. However, budget constraints were noted as a hindrance to the commission’s educational outreach efforts. A proposal was put forward to increase the commission’s budget from $300 to $500 annually, which could support broader community engagement and educational activities. The council appeared open to this suggestion.
Financial resolutions were another focal point of the meeting. The council unanimously approved several resolutions, including payments from various accounts totaling $79,737.93 and payments to New Jersey Natural Gas Company. Additionally, Bruce Peragalo was appointed as an alternate member of the planning board.
In matters concerning healthcare, the council formalized its relationship with Acquashure as the broker for healthcare and prescription medical insurance. This decision followed previous advisement from Acquashure regarding health insurance changes.
The council also functioned as the Alcohol Beverage Control Board, reviewing applications for liquor licensing extensions. Alliatory Inc.’s application for a permanent extension of premises for special events, specifically for a volleyball court area, was approved following deliberations. The council confirmed that fire code and safety regulations remained unchanged from when special permissions were granted during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the application from MATTA, Inc. for a similar extension on Parade Day was deferred due to the absence of a representative. The council noted that past applications had not posed issues but emphasized the importance of applicant presence for addressing any potential concerns.
