Lakeville City Council Discusses Aircraft Noise Complaints and Airport Developments
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Lakeville City Council meeting, discussions primarily centered around the increase in aircraft noise complaints related to Air Lake Airport and ongoing developments concerning airport infrastructure.
In the third quarter of 2025, the Air Lake Airport received five noise complaints. These complaints involved various aircraft, including a Cessna 172 operating at night and a helicopter event that originated from outside the immediate vicinity of Lakeville. This clarification is crucial as it reflects on the airport’s reported noise levels and community concerns.
Another topic was the franchise fee related to the electrical meter designations for hangers at the airport. The city had engaged with Excel Energy to determine if a rate classification change was needed, though no resolution had been reached yet.
Additionally, the council reviewed progress on a new road to be paved by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which overcame a significant hurdle by decoupling the project from federal review requirements. The intention is to complete the paving by next year, pending any unforeseen changes.
The council also received updates on the runway extension project, which remains stalled due to protracted discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over environmental review processes. In light of these delays, the MAC is exploring interim improvements to the airfield to address current conditions without waiting for the extension’s approval.
During the airport manager’s update, it was noted that a new LED rotating beacon would be installed to replace the existing one, which had been malfunctioning. This installation aims to enhance safety and visibility for pilots. The airport also acquired a new plow truck to improve snow removal operations during winter months.
