The commission plans to propose a $15,000 spending cap, a figure determined after research into anticipated revenue and expenses.

Concerns were raised about the fund’s impact on the town’s budget, particularly given that it would remove approximately $10,000 in estimated receipts from the general fund. However, proponents argued that the fund would enhance the commission’s ability to address environmental violations and support conservation efforts without imposing financial strain on the town.

The commission acknowledged that the proposal’s success depends on the support of the Finance Committee and the Select Board. While the proposal has yet to receive formal recommendations from these bodies, it was noted that a member of the Finance Committee did not express opposition to the plan. The commission emphasized the importance of community input.

If approved, the revolving fund would be the first of its kind in Lakeville, aligning with practices in other towns where similar funds facilitate streamlined financial management for municipal boards. The fund’s focus would include covering costs for measures such as wetland bylaw enforcement, an area where the commission has faced challenges due to limited resources.
