Lakeville Council Focuses on Public Works Advancements and Community Engagement Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Lakeville City Council meeting covered a range of topics, with emphasis on ongoing public works projects, community events, and environmental initiatives. Key discussions included updates on construction projects like the 185th Street improvements and Oak Shores Park developments, as well as community engagement through the National Night Out and Taste of Lakeville events. The council also addressed environmental efforts in the city and reviewed municipal utility and liquor sales reports.
A major highlight of the meeting was the comprehensive update provided by the public works department. The city is currently in the midst of its construction season, with several notable projects underway. The 185th Street project, which spans from County Road 50 to IPA, is approximately 40% complete. The public works director reported that paving at the APA intersection is in progress alongside storm sewer installations. Despite some weather-related delays, the project is anticipated to open to traffic by the end of August.
In addition, the roundabout construction at County Road 50 and Hamburg began on July 13th, with completion expected by the end of September. The street reconstruction project is well advanced, with progress on water main installations and ongoing storm sewer work. It’s projected to be substantially finished by year-end. Furthermore, the city is undertaking a street rehabilitation project involving milling and overlaying various streets, focusing on areas like Glasco and 183rd Street. A surface seal project to extend the lifespan of residential streets is also scheduled to begin on August 18th.
The public works department also discussed community event involvement, including participation in Panaprog and a touch-a-truck event, both of which received positive community feedback. Efforts to manage the Emerald Ash Borer infestation continue, with more than 600 affected trees removed from 438 properties.
The Lakeville Rotary’s announcement about the upcoming Taste of Lakeville event also received considerable attention. Scheduled for August 14th at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, the 23rd annual event promises unlimited food samples from over 30 local restaurants, in addition to wine, beer, and spirit tastings. Tickets are priced at $50 in advance and $60 at the gate. The event will feature live entertainment by the band Atari, known for its 80s music repertoire. Proceeds will support local organizations and scholarships, with the Rotary Club having donated over $325,000 in recent years. The council commended the Rotary’s contributions and encouraged community participation.
Another item was the National Night Out proclamation, intended to enhance police-community partnerships. Scheduled for August 5th, 2025, the event aims to foster crime, drug, and violence prevention through community engagement. Citizens are encouraged to join local law enforcement in supporting these initiatives, with the police chief noting that registration for parties remains open until the end of the week.
Environmental efforts were also a focal point, particularly the East Lake invasive species removal program. Over 4,000 pounds of carp and goldfish have been extracted this year, adding to the previous year’s total for a cumulative removal of approximately 7,000 pounds. This project aims to improve water quality and is conducted in collaboration with the Bowser Vermillion Watershed District. Additionally, curly leaf pond treatments have taken place on Lake Mirian and Orchard Lake, covering nearly 30 acres. A rise in curly leaf was observed, potentially due to a mild winter and increased rainfall. A survey for Eurasian milfoil is planned for later in the summer, with potential grants for management activities.
The forestry division reported ongoing efforts against the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation, including outreach to 604 properties, removal of over 600 trees, and treatment of 11 trees. Surveys in August are planned to inform future management programs.
The meeting concluded with a review of the liquor operations director’s midyear report. Sales have seen a slight decrease compared to the previous year, totaling over $10 million, down by approximately 4.5%. However, e-commerce sales have increased by 46%, and community fundraising efforts have been strong, with almost $29,000 and 300 pounds of food collected for local food shelves. The liquor store has been recognized as a top retailer, and staffing changes and upcoming fundraising events, including the Taste of Lakeville and support for veterans through the Yellow Ribbon Program, were highlighted.
