Lakeville Park Commission Considers NFL Youth Program and Debates Defibrillator Policy
- Meeting Overview:
In its recent meeting, the Lakeville Park Commission explored several issues, including the introduction of an NFL-affiliated youth flag football program and the future of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in local parks. The meeting revealed important initiatives and concerns.
One of the meeting’s highlights was the presentation by Coach Rig, who introduced the Next Level Sports Club, an NFL youth flag football program that aims to inspire children aged 4 to 17. Coach Rig, with over 25 years of experience and an impressive educational background, detailed the program’s mission to promote leadership and communication skills among young participants. He emphasized the growing popularity of flag football, especially as parents seek alternatives to tackle football due to safety concerns. The program is structured to cater to various age groups and abilities, including a division for Young Athletes with Different Abilities (YADA), inspired by a parent’s request for inclusive sports opportunities.
The program has experienced significant growth since its launch in spring 2022, with participation ranging from 150 to 200 children across different seasons. Coach Rig outlined the employment opportunities the program provides for high school and college students as referees and coaches, underscoring its role in workforce development. He shared positive anecdotes about the program’s impact on participants, particularly in teaching resilience in competition.
Coach Rig sought support from the commission, advocating for a dedicated field to host the program and assistance in promoting it through local events. He also addressed concerns about competition with existing local sports programs, asserting that his initiative offers additional choices for families and complements the local sports landscape. He assured the commission that there is sufficient interest to sustain multiple programs in the area.
The meeting also addressed the commission’s responsibility regarding AEDs in parks, a topic that sparked considerable debate. Concerns centered on liability and the need for proper training in AED use. Some members questioned the necessity of maintaining AEDs, citing advice from the fire chief against it. They contended that groups wishing to use AEDs should procure their own and ensure proper training. However, another viewpoint emphasized the life-saving potential of AEDs, particularly in areas like Clear Pond, advocating for their presence as a critical safety measure.
A motion was passed to amend the previous decision, stipulating the elimination of all AEDs except for one at Clear Pond Park, with plans to purchase a new device. The cost for the new AED was set at $13.99 plus tax, with discussions about acquiring an older model from Chief O’Brien as a backup. Training and certification for staff would be addressed in the spring to ensure readiness.
In addition to these discussions, the commission reviewed other topics, such as the appointment of Melissa as the representative for the Clear Pond Park engineering plan committee. The project involves coordination with environmental partners, with an updated budget remaining under the allocated $45,000. Concerns were raised about compliance with ARPA funding requirements, emphasizing the need to secure a contract by December 3 to ensure funding.
Attention was also given to the Cranberry Trifest event, scheduled for August 25, 2025. The commission approved a fee increase from $7.50 to $8.00 per participant, balancing the need to maintain the event’s revenue potential while remaining competitive with other towns. The event has historically generated substantial income, and the commission recognized the importance of keeping it in Lakeville.
The financial management of park resources was another focal point, with discussions on electricity costs and field usage fees for local leagues. The commission considered eliminating a proposed 5% fee increase for the upcoming year, opting instead for leagues to pay last year’s total to avoid backlash.
Maintenance issues also surfaced, highlighting ongoing plumbing and heating problems that require immediate attention. The commission acknowledged the need for budgetary adjustments to address these repairs, potentially from capital project funds. A proposal for a park liaison with the select board was introduced to improve communication and streamline decision-making processes.
