Lakeville Select Board Approves New Fire Chief Contract and Explores Tax Relief Options
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Lakeville Select Board, decisions included the approval of a new contract for Fire Chief Michael O’Brien, the discussion of potential tax relief measures for residents on fixed incomes, and the proposal to rename a local bridge in honor of a Vietnam War veteran. Additionally, the board considered a community biodiversity grant application for Long Pond and various other administrative matters.
The board unanimously approved a new employment agreement for Fire Chief Michael O’Brien, whose current contract expires at the end of June 2026. The newly outlined contract specifies a base salary of $128,613, along with an education incentive and various stipends, culminating in a total compensation package of $157,729.85. This agreement follows negotiations and marks a commitment to retaining leadership in Lakeville’s Fire Department.
In a move reflecting ongoing community support, an agreement with the Town of Carver to provide animal control services was reinstated. Carver had previously exited this partnership but is now returning, citing a positive reception to Lakeville’s program. The board authorized signing this agreement, aligning it with existing contracts with other towns, and mentioned that a future review of fees might be necessary to reflect actual service costs.
The board also discussed forming a working group to address anticipated tax increases and their impact on residents with fixed incomes, particularly seniors. The group would explore existing programs and the potential implementation of a circuit breaker tax credit. The board emphasized the importance of ensuring that eligible residents are aware of and utilize available tax exemptions, with plans to hold information sessions to boost outreach.
A proposal was made to dedicate and rename the Pickens Street bridge in honor of Brian Reynolds, a Vietnam War veteran, and longtime community member. The board expressed unanimous support for the dedication, recognizing Reynolds’ contributions and the need for potential special legislation to facilitate the renaming process.
Additionally, the board is making a second attempt to secure a biodiversity grant for Long Pond, requesting $37,750 to develop a five-year vegetation management plan targeting invasive species. This follows a previously unsuccessful application in a competitive round that saw over 200 submissions. The Long Pond Association has been involved in the application process, and the board discussed including previous funding successes to strengthen the current proposal.
Routine administrative tasks were also addressed, including the approval of water connection applications for two properties and the annual procedure for appointing poll workers. The board authorized letters to be sent to state committees for appointments by August 15th.
A letter of commendation from resident Maren Candido was read, praising Officer Adam Swift for his assistance to her daughter during a roadside emergency. Officer Swift’s actions were highlighted as exemplary of community service and dedication.
Toward the end of the meeting, the board entered an executive session to discuss real estate matters related to the Lakeville Country Club. They did not return to open session thereafter, concluding the meeting at 6:41 p.m.
