- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Lawrence School Board meeting, the district announced a $110,000 grant from Church and Dwight’s Employee Giving Fund to support the Streamwatch Scientists program. This initiative will provide outdoor learning and environmental education opportunities for students at Slackwood and Eldridge Park Elementary Schools. The meeting also highlighted ongoing facility improvements at Slackwood School, a partnership with Rowan College for college credit courses, and logistics challenges in school transportation.
The most noteworthy development from the meeting was the presentation by Bonnie Giglio, Executive Director of the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF), who announced the substantial grant dedicated to the Streamwatch Scientists program. This initiative aims to engage elementary school students in hands-on environmental education activities. The program will allow students to participate in data collection in local streams and experience learning opportunities at the Watershed Institute. The board expressed gratitude for this community partnership and emphasized the importance of these educational opportunities.
Following the grant announcement, attention shifted to Slackwood School, where extensive facility improvements were discussed. The speaker detailed the blend of historical architecture with modern amenities that characterize the school. Slackwood School has undergone various upgrades, including security enhancements such as a vestibule, panic buttons, and ballistic glass film on windows while maintaining its historical charm. A “sunshine room” dedicated to a deceased staff member and a vibrant restored teachers’ room were highlighted as unique features that contribute to the school’s welcoming atmosphere. The board underscored their commitment to preserving the school’s historical significance while ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.
The discussion also touched on the recent installation of new sinks and the transformation of the old library into two new rooms with security doors and advanced HVAC systems. These modifications are part of a broader effort to modernize Slackwood’s facilities. The school’s Counseling Center, which includes a pantry for families in need, further illustrates Slackwood’s supportive initiatives.
In addition to facility updates, the board discussed the district’s partnership with Rowan College of Burlington County. This collaboration offers high school students the chance to take college courses, such as honors Wind Ensemble and Advanced Placement languages, for credit. Counselors are assisting students with the enrollment process, which remains open until January 9, 2025. Financial assistance is available for those in need.
Transportation challenges for Lawrence Intermediate School were also a topic of discussion. The board faced difficulties in securing an affordable shuttle service, with quotes exceeding budget expectations. The board is now considering the possibility of hiring their own drivers as a more feasible solution, expressing disappointment over the unsuccessful attempt to secure a shuttle service. This issue highlights the financial constraints and logistical challenges the district faces in meeting transportation needs.
The meeting also addressed a forthcoming referendum vote scheduled for March 11, aimed at addressing the expansion and renovation of the middle school. Materials about the referendum were made available for attendees.
Public input was solicited during the meeting, with Dan Brennan, a district employee and parent, raising questions about the referendum’s impact on the district’s budget. The board clarified that the referendum is separate from the general operating budget. Brennan also questioned the benefits of sending administrators to China as part of an educational exchange program. The board explained that the program fosters beneficial educational relationships and is funded mainly by a grant.
Committee reports included updates from the Personnel Committee, which reviewed new hire recommendations and ongoing negotiations with the Lawrence Township Education Association. The board approved several personnel actions, including resignations and retirements, notably recognizing Patricia Nelson for her nearly 18 years of service in the superintendent’s office.
