Lawrence School Board Welcomes $32,140 Grant for STEAM Education, Plans New Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Lawrence (Mercer County) School Board meeting highlighted a $32,140 grant from the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTE) to enhance STEAM education, alongside updates on construction projects and strategic planning for transportation routes. The board also discussed Advanced Placement (AP) exam results, financial updates, and upcoming community events.
The most notable development was the announcement of a $32,140 grant from the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTE) to bolster STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education across all grade levels in Lawrence Township Public Schools. This grant, made possible through a partnership with Bristol Meyer Swift, will fund five ZSpace immersive learning stations. These state-of-the-art stations integrate augmented and virtual reality, allowing students to interact with 3D objects and fostering collaborative learning environments. Bonnie Gigglio, the executive director of LTE, emphasized the critical role of STEAM education in preparing students for future workforce demands, while also pointing out the historical underfunding of such programs nationwide. The board expressed enthusiasm about the grant’s potential to enhance educational opportunities and outcomes for students.
In addition to the STEAM grant, the board received updates on a recent bond sale related to a referendum, which was completed with a lower-than-expected interest rate of 4.16%. This financial update was seen as beneficial for the projected tax impact. The first phase of construction, focusing on the auditorium, was reported to be out for bid, with a pre-bid meeting generating interest from general contractors. The opening of bids is scheduled for later this month, with contract awards anticipated in September. The board secretary reassured attendees that multiple projects are underway, including improvements to the gym floor at Slackwood and ongoing renovations at Eldridge Park.
The meeting also focused on transportation planning for special education students, highlighting strategic sessions led by transportation supervisor Andrea Nesmouth. The plan includes implementing two aides on each route to enhance student support. The board expressed appreciation for the dedication shown by district staff, particularly during the summer preparations for the upcoming school year. A board member commended the staff, stating, “I want to echo Vanessa’s kudos to all our dedicated staff who work behind the scenes to prepare for the new school year.”
Attention then turned to academic achievements, with a discussion on Advanced Placement (AP) exam results. The board reviewed performance across various subjects, including English, history, and world languages. Notably, approximately 50 students excelled in English language and U.S. history classes, earning scores of 3 or higher on their AP exams. The Spanish language and culture class also demonstrated remarkable performance, with scores surpassing those of peers both statewide and globally. Enrollment in English literature and composition, along with Spanish language and culture classes, saw increases, the latter doubling in size.
A personal anecdote was shared about a former student who graduated with substantial college credits, attributing her preparedness for university courses to the rigorous curriculum offered by the school. This story underscored the effectiveness of the educational programs in place. The conversation shifted to AP results in STEM subjects, noting steady or increased enrollment and high success rates in 2D art and design, which achieved a 100% pass rate for students scoring three or higher.
The board also addressed personnel matters, with discussions on candidate recommendations for teaching positions and swift hiring efforts by the personnel committee. A board member praised the talent involved in these efforts, emphasizing the importance of having dedicated staff to support the district’s goals.
Community engagement was emphasized with upcoming events organized by the LTE, including a family fun run on September 6th at Village Park to promote community spirit and physical fitness. Another event, handbag bingo, is scheduled for November 14th to further encourage community participation.
