One of the standout grants is the $1,400 awarded to the Ben Franklin Streamkeepers program. This initiative, led by Colleen Chancer, has engaged students in citizen science and stream observation for over 15 years. The grant will fund necessary tools and clothing, allowing students to continue their hands-on environmental studies. At Lawrenceville Elementary School, a $1,170 grant has been designated for sensory supports to aid preK through third-grade students. This initiative is designed to help young learners regulate emotions and improve focus through sensory engagement opportunities.

Slackwood Elementary School received $1,000 for a program called “Slackwood Shines, Sewing Hope in Nature Every Season,” led by Ebony Latimer, Stacy Moore, and Kristen Hopson. This project integrates writing, math, and science with environmental stewardship, encouraging students to engage with nature through hands-on gardening activities. Meanwhile, Eldridge Park Elementary School was awarded an $842 grant for “Windows and Mattering,” a project that uses multicultural and multi-ability dolls to promote self-identity and inclusivity among children.

Lawrence Intermediate School also benefited from several grants. A notable project, “Connecting with the Stars Daily,” focuses on enriching fifth graders’ astronomy knowledge with a $390 grant. Additional funding of $2,662 for “Seats for Success” will provide flexible seating to support language development for English Language Learners. A sensory lending library and a project to design uplifting stairway quotes received $1,500 and $755, respectively, to enhance the school environment and support student well-being.

Lawrence Middle School (LMS) received funding for innovative projects, including $1,200 for a multi-purpose heat press to support design and product creation education. The “Books for Belonging” initiative was awarded $500 to build a library collection focusing on empathy and inclusion. At Lawrence High School (LHS), grants supported various programs including a $460 allocation for the Laorenian newspaper’s website and $499 for the robotics team to participate in competitions.

The meeting also addressed the middle school construction project, set to begin in December with initial interior demolition and necessary asbestos abatement scheduled during winter break. Communication plans are in place to keep parents and staff informed, with a detailed Gantt chart outlining the project’s timeline and expected completion dates.

The board’s ongoing efforts to enhance educational infrastructure included discussions on the upcoming budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Planning is underway, with a November 15 deadline for internal preparations. Additional topics included custodial outsourcing at Ben Franklin Elementary School to increase efficiency and reduce costs, while ensuring no layoffs occur.

Furthermore, the board touched on solar renewable energy credit sales, which are expected to generate revenue and contribute to sustainability efforts. The importance of these initiatives was underscored by the role they play in reducing energy costs and providing a steady income stream for the district.

In other meeting highlights, the board recognized Janette Capriti of Lawrence Middle School for receiving the prestigious Milken Award, akin to a Grammy for educators. The superintendent also acknowledged recent Veterans Day observances and celebrated the achievements of three educators recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education as exemplary.
