Leonia School Board Grapples with Technology’s Role in Education Amid Device Ban Legislation
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Leonia School Board meeting, the focal point of discussion centered on the impact of technology in education following former Governor Murphy’s ban on internet-enabled personal devices in schools. This legislative change prompted an impassioned debate among board members, highlighting differing perspectives on technology’s role in student learning.
One board member argued that technology, often viewed as a panacea for educational challenges, might contribute more problems than solutions. This member cited movements in Brazil and Australia, where similar bans have been enacted, suggesting that technology is detracting from, rather than enhancing, student learning experiences. They called for a comprehensive reevaluation of current technology policies, urging the board to consider five specific actions, including educating themselves on the research surrounding cell phone use, pausing further edtech expenditures, and revisiting the use of AI tools within classrooms.
In response, another board member acknowledged the concerns. They emphasized the importance of aligning technology use with the district’s strategic plan and noted that guidance from the governor’s office was anticipated within 60 days. The board was urged to create a clear vision of technology’s role in schools to ensure it effectively serves educational needs.
Further intensifying the technology debate, a pilot program involving Apple iPads for student learning was discussed. Initially launched at the middle school, the program aims to assess the educational effectiveness of iPads compared to Chromebooks. Feedback from students and faculty has been positive, with reports of heightened student enthusiasm. Plans are in place to extend this pilot to the high school, pending further evaluations.
Another topic of discussion was the pending approval of an interim business administrator and school board secretary, slated to begin duties around March 1st, contingent upon contract approval. The candidate in question boasts extensive experience as a business administrator in another district, and there is optimism about the contributions he can bring to the district.
In addition to administrative updates, Dr. Karamos provided valuable information on local initiatives, including the pursuit of a recreational improvement grant aimed at enhancing the ACS playground area. The proposed project involves constructing a retaining wall to alleviate flooding issues during heavy storms. Dr. Karamos expressed hope for securing the grant, acknowledging the necessity of these improvements.
The board also addressed changes to healthcare benefits, transitioning to a new health plan. Faculty meetings have been scheduled to address staff queries. Additionally, an upcoming reform will shift public notice publications to digital formats, making them accessible on the district’s website.
On the academic front, updates from the high school highlighted various achievements. Students participated in the Bergen County Honor Choir concert, and the wrestling team clinched a league championship. The high school’s literary magazine also received accolades, and a Holocaust survivor’s visit provided a notable educational experience for students.
In the realm of student safety, Dr. Karamos presented the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) numbers for the first reporting period, revealing a total of 14 incidents across schools, a slight decrease from the previous year. The board remains vigilant in addressing these matters to foster a secure learning environment.
The meeting concluded with community engagement during the public comments section, where Lori Molino highlighted an upcoming regional CPAG meeting focused on vocational opportunities for students with IEPs. This initiative is geared towards facilitating their transition into the workforce or higher education.
