Liberty County School Board Plans New Athletic Recruitment Strategy Amid Legislative Changes
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Liberty County School Board meeting, attention was given to the development of a new athletic recruitment strategy, which aims to enhance student-athlete exposure and recruitment opportunities. The board discussed the implementation of a recruiting coordinator position to assist students in creating highlight videos and managing communications with college coaches. This initiative comes in response to the challenge that many students reportedly face in navigating existing recruitment systems, leading to missed opportunities.
The proposed role of a recruiting coordinator would involve a supplemental position dedicated to managing statistics, facilitating communication between athletes and coaches, and effectively marketing the athletic program. This new role is seen as a valuable marketing tool, not only for retaining current students but also for attracting new ones. The board emphasized that if the school could keep or attract just one student, the cost of the position would be justified. A member expressed optimism about the potential benefits of this role, particularly in light of new legislation, specifically House Bill 538, which may influence transfer rules and recruiting practices in the future.
The discussion also touched on the existing systems that various sports teams use, such as Huddle for football and Game Changer for softball. These platforms allow athletes to create highlight reels that can be sent to college recruiters. However, there was debate about whether other sports would have access to these systems without separate payments, as the football team had already invested $3,000 into a three-year deal for this technology.
A point of contention surfaced regarding the legality and appropriateness of recruiting practices. It was reminded that while helping students to be recruited at the next level is permissible, recruiting high school students from other schools is not allowed. Despite some skepticism about the necessity of a designated recruiting coordinator—suggesting that parents often take on this role—the consensus was that a dedicated coordinator could offer more targeted support and outreach than parents could manage alone.
Additionally, the board addressed challenges regarding athletic fees in light of recent legislative changes. The new legislation stipulates a maximum fee of $400 per sport for PEP scholarship students, a shift from the previous arrangement of $250 per semester. Despite the change, Liberty County does not currently charge athletic fees. The board was cautious about implementing the new fee structure immediately. The potential for introducing higher fees in the future was also considered, with concerns expressed about the perception of the school district if such charges were enacted.
A legislative funding update was provided during the meeting, detailing a specific funding request for $120,000 aimed at enhancing classroom safety and security measures, including retrofitting classroom doors and installing bulletproof film on windows. This request, which Ricky Sansson helped prepare, is important for school safety, especially with the background of previous school safety concerns. While the superintendent expressed confidence that this funding would not be vetoed, uncertainties regarding other funding requests, particularly for historical projects at Hosford, remain.
The board also recognized several long-term employees for their upcoming retirements, including Bess, Beth, and Laura, who have each dedicated over 30 years to the district in various roles. Their contributions were celebrated with emotional tributes. Ricky Sansson, the district’s school safety specialist, was also honored for his five years of service, despite facing health challenges.
In terms of staffing, the superintendent reported that the district was close to being fully staffed for the next school year, with only one position remaining to be filled. New appointments were announced, including Jackson Summers as the assistant principal at Toller School and Rob Wheatley at Hosford School, effective July 1. The superintendent also provided updates regarding ongoing health concerns for a staff member undergoing treatment, praising the community’s support and prayers.
