One of the issues discussed was the implementation of outside security options for the upcoming school year, following negotiations with the Linden Education Association (LEA). The board approved the attorney’s report on this matter. In conjunction with this, the board also proposed the addition of a monthly security committee meeting to discuss security measures with the director of security, although the frequency of these meetings and the potential involvement of the buildings and grounds committee were subjects of debate.

The superintendent’s report shed light on the district’s efforts to enhance educational opportunities for students. The summer programs were a focal point, including credit recovery and STEM programs, as well as a partnership with a pharmaceutical company providing a 10-day STEM program for middle school students. The Torch Leadership Academy saw five district students accepted into a free 4-day leadership program at Stockton University. The report also mentioned the Linden Police Department Academy, which offers a week of training for students, highlighting the potential career pathways it could open.

Another subject of pride for the board was the achievements of students, particularly Abigail Armstead, a senior who made it to the national level of the Elks beauty pageant. Additionally, the board recognized the long-standing dedication of retiring teacher Miss Kathleen Burke, who served the district for 33 years.

During the meeting, there was also a discussion on the Danielson framework for teaching, which is set to be the evaluation tool for certificated staff. The administrative team and teacher leaders from the skip committee are slated to receive training on this framework, with follow-up sessions planned for the entire school year.

The education report was another key agenda item, with the Education Committee moving for the approval of items one through 36, which were unanimously approved. Similarly, the Finance report was presented, with items one through 40 approved, save for item 33 which was tabled pending further investigation.

Public comments highlighted the community’s support for the board and its efforts, particularly in relation to a student representing New Jersey in a national pageant and the reinstatement of the World Language student exchange programs at Linden High School. Concerns were also raised about the conversion of a Basement Store room to an office and the safety of employees in emergency situations. Suggestions for fundraising for school events were discussed, including the idea of hosting a comedy night at the high school.

Training for district staff, such as secretaries, custodians, and hall monitors, was another point of inquiry. The board was informed about the professional development being conducted by the district security director for hall monitors and the implementation of the Handle With Care program. Secretaries are provided with in-house training sessions and access to external training opportunities, while custodians receive on-the-job training and must maintain their boiler license.

The board also addressed the focus on multilingual learners and the importance of English-speaking students becoming proficient in a second language. The Director of Multilingual Learners outlined the expansion plans for the world language program at the elementary level. Additionally, there was a positive response to the suggestion of creating a program for local businesses to hire high school students during the summer.

Concerns about the increasing trend of students withdrawing from the school system to be homeschooled were voiced. A board member expressed worry about the underlying reasons for this trend, and the possibility of having a public information officer present monthly updates to the board was discussed.
