Lindenwold Council Tackles Weather-Related Travel Woes and Ordinance Approvals
- Meeting Overview:
The Lindenwold Borough Council meeting was marked by discussions on adverse weather conditions causing travel disruptions and the approval of several ordinances related to equipment acquisition and park fees. The meeting also addressed community concerns about an upcoming protest and provided updates on public safety and public works operations.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the impact of recent severe weather, which disrupted travel plans for numerous residents. These disruptions notably caused many to miss international flights, and the council acknowledged the widespread frustration. Attendees described the situation as a “nightmare,” highlighting the severe impact on the community. Compounding these issues was the implementation of a new deadline for obtaining a Real ID for domestic air travel, effective February 1st. Residents without a Real ID must pay an additional $45 at the airport for a background check. The council stressed the importance of acquiring a Real ID to avoid lengthy TSA wait times, noting that various forms of identification, such as federal IDs and passport cards, are accepted to obtain it.
In tandem with this discussion, the council addressed Ordinance 2026 concerning amendments to park and recreation fees, as well as Ordinance 20261 and Ordinance 20262, both authorizing the acquisition of capital equipment and utility improvements. Each ordinance was motioned for adoption and received unanimous approval. Despite invitations for public comments, there was no feedback from attendees.
The closure of the Hall of Justice in Camden due to a water main break and subsequent mold issues was another pressing topic. The council advised residents to contact the court by phone for inquiries, as the building remains inaccessible for public business.
Attention then shifted to the upcoming SAVE Act, which aims to verify voter citizenship. Concerns were raised about the potential impact on women whose married names might not match their citizenship documents, as the act only accepts birth certificates and passports for U.S. citizens. The urgency for residents to ensure their identification aligns with voter registration was emphasized to prevent election day complications.
The council also recognized February as Black History Month. The historical significance of the month was noted, particularly its connection to the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The council encouraged recognition of diverse cultural contributions to American history, highlighting inventions by African Americans that have become integral to society.
Further discussions during the meeting included a presentation by the FBI Philadelphia division on potential financial elder abuse, held on East Browning Road in Belmar, New Jersey. This seminar is part of ongoing efforts to educate seniors on protecting themselves from fraud.
A notable community safety update was the introduction of two sticker programs by the fire commission: one for pet identification and another for autism awareness. These programs aim to assist emergency responders in handling situations sensitively.
The public comment section of the meeting brought forward concerns about an upcoming protest, including the absence of a permit and potential police overtime costs. The borough had no prior knowledge of the protest, and the police chief was tasked with investigating the matter. Residents expressed concerns about potential traffic disruptions, while skepticism was voiced regarding claims made in protest flyers, particularly those alleging kidnappings in the area.
Lastly, public works and police department reports highlighted their response to the recent storm. The public works department was recognized for collecting significant amounts of trash and recycling, with no reported accidents or injuries. The police department reported 1,742 calls, including traffic accidents and community policing efforts.
