Little Falls School Board Considers School Consolidation Amid Enrollment Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Little Falls School Board primarily focused on significant enrollment challenges, the potential consolidation of school facilities, and a potential restructuring of the district’s grade levels. The board discussed the implications of families choosing to enroll in other districts and the resulting impact on staffing and facilities. Other notable topics included the integration of instructional strategies through Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and the Student Assistance Team (SAT) processes, as well as the benefits of recent professional development opportunities.
A critical discussion point was the exploration of consolidating the district’s schools due to fluctuating student enrollment numbers. The board revealed that fewer students than expected had enrolled in the district, with a planning model predicting a loss of 59 students. Although there have been some layoffs, teaching positions remain intact, and only the principal position was reduced due to a lack of available reassignment. The board members expressed concern about the potential need for further staff reductions should undecided families choose to enroll elsewhere. However, it was noted that the situation had not yet reached a threshold requiring additional cuts.
In response to these enrollment changes, the board discussed a proposal to evaluate the feasibility of closing the middle school and transitioning to a model where grades 7-12 would be housed together, while sixth graders would attend Lindberg Elementary. The board highlighted the importance of an architectural evaluation, particularly as remodeling projects exceeding $175,000 necessitate architectural plans. These plans are expected to focus on creating practical classroom and instructional spaces without unnecessary additions, such as extra gym facilities. Community members expressed some apprehension, especially concerning the management of lunch hours and the separation of older and younger students. To address these concerns, a third lunch hour was suggested as a potential solution.
The board also discussed the ongoing logistical efforts surrounding the transition away from the Dr. Knight building, with staff and materials being relocated to Lincoln and Lindberg Schools. An auction for remaining equipment and supplies is anticipated for the fall, although playground equipment will not be included. Discussions with the city of Randall regarding the future use of the Dr. Knight building are forthcoming, with an emphasis on seeking community input.
Further discussions during the meeting centered on instructional strategies and student interventions. The board praised the implementation of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Student Assistance Team (SAT) processes, which have enabled more tailored programming to meet student needs. Interventions were conducted during designated “what I need” (WIN) times. As a result, there has reportedly been an increase in the number of students exiting intervention programs, with 14 kindergarten students at Lincoln successfully transitioning out of intervention services.
The board emphasized the importance of age-appropriate resources in schools, with Lincoln focusing on grades K-2 and Lindberg on grades 3-5. Professional development opportunities, particularly in letters training, were noted as beneficial, facilitated by the consolidation of grade-level groups under one roof. This has eased coordination and reduced scheduling challenges that previously complicated collaboration across buildings. The merger of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) was mentioned as a positive development, fostering unity among staff and families across elementary buildings.
Despite these gains, the board acknowledged the need for more data to accurately assess student achievement, emphasizing that one year of data is insufficient for definitive conclusions. They expressed pride in the transition process throughout the school year but recognized initial challenges, particularly with parent pickup logistics and emotional management among younger students.
Transportation logistics were another key area of discussion, with staff implementing strategies to ensure children boarded the correct buses daily. Each child at Lincoln had a bus tag to facilitate identification, and radio communication was described as effective. Parents expressed concerns about drop-off and pickup procedures, particularly regarding the integration of older and younger siblings, but it was reported that children managed the transition well.
The superintendent’s report outlined logistical efforts, indicating that records have been secured at the district office, and teachers will have the opportunity to access materials from the closed building. An important meeting was planned with city officials to discuss Little Falls being considered a site for the state cross-country meet, which would utilize local golf course facilities, offering benefits to the community.
The meeting concluded with a resolution concerning Leah Rosski, who was placed on unrequested leave due to financial constraints, effective June 30, 2025. A similar resolution was passed for Shannon Larson, whose position was also subject to unrequested leave due to lack of enrollment. Additionally, the board adopted a 10-year long-term facilities maintenance plan, required for state approval.
