Little Falls School Board Faces Inclusion Concerns and Expanding Sports Needs
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Little Falls School Board meeting addressed inclusion concerns raised by parents, the need for expanded sports facilities due to increased participation, and celebrated Native American Heritage Month while also recognizing various staff and student achievements.
The meeting took a turn during the public comment section when Sarah Mororrow addressed the board about her son’s exclusion from extracurricular activities, which she contended violated federal disability laws. Mororrow argued that her son’s removal from a basketball program was not only discriminatory but also detrimental to his social, emotional, and educational development. She cited federal mandates such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act to emphasize the necessity of equal access for students with disabilities.
The issue of expanding sports facilities was also a focal point, with community members voicing concerns about the current inadequacy of gymnasium space. Kyle Hullber highlighted the rapid growth of the district’s basketball program, which now serves over 140 participants. Hullber stressed the developmental benefits of sports, including physical health, teamwork, and discipline, and advocated for the consideration of improved or additional gymnasium facilities. Similarly, Nick Preszinski from the volleyball association emphasized the potential of multi-use facilities to serve a wide range of activities, urging the board to consider their broader impact on youth engagement.
In addition to these topics, the meeting celebrated Native American Heritage Month with a presentation by Chris Mittenberg, coordinator for the American Indian Education Program. Mittenberg shared initiatives including tutoring and cultural trips for Native American students, supported by a grant that facilitated the display of tribal flags from across Minnesota. He recounted an educational trip where students engaged with various activities, humorously noting his own experience trying crickets.
Beyond public concerns, the board recognized district staff and students for their contributions. Several educators and support staff were commended for their dedication to student welfare and effective classroom management. Notable mentions included Tracy Atkinson, a childcare aide known for her positive presence, and Lisa Salver, the curriculum coordinator praised for her passion for literacy. The meeting also included an update from student representatives, who highlighted recent district activities, such as fall concerts and the National FFA Convention, where Alicia Holtz earned an American degree.
The board proceeded with routine approvals, including the acceptance of donations to support school programs and initiatives. A motion was approved for the acceptance of various gifts, reflecting ongoing community support for the district’s educational endeavors. Recognitions were made through Flyer Pride cards, honoring staff members like Payton Carl for their outstanding contributions.
Superintendent Greg Johnson provided remarks acknowledging the success of recent events like Flyerfest and highlighted professional development activities focusing on educational strategies. The meeting concluded with the discussion and approval of new business proposals, including a contract for snow removal services and updates to Policy 410 concerning family and medical leave, reflecting recent state law changes.
