- Meeting Overview:
The Little Falls School Board meeting on November 14, 2024, was dominated by discussions surrounding the growing success of the high school Esports team and a noteworthy increase in community engagement through recent fundraising and educational events. The meeting also delved into the board’s strategic goals for student achievement and acknowledged contributions from local organizations and individuals.
One item at the meeting was the detailed presentation on the Little Falls High School Esports team’s evolution and achievements. Nate Selby, along with student team captains, introduced the board to the program’s mission and accomplishments. Since its inception in 2023, the team has expanded from 15 students to a robust group competing in state-level competitions. Notably, two Fortnite duos from the team qualified for state, with one tying for second place. The presentation emphasized the team’s focus on providing a structured competitive environment while offering students opportunities in video streaming, broadcast production, and marketing. This approach mirrors traditional sports in terms of teamwork and strategy but is conducted in a digital arena.
The board members were engaged by the Esports presentation, inquiring about team structures and competitive dynamics. The team clarified that they cater to both casual and competitive players, with opportunities for junior varsity and varsity participation. This inclusivity has not only fostered a sense of community within the school but has also opened pathways for students to explore potential careers in gaming and related fields. A recent visit to St. Cloud State University, which offers degrees in esports, was highlighted as a experience for these students, further underscoring the program’s educational value.
Another major focus of the meeting was the impressive fundraising achievement of Flyer Fest, which raised over $53,000 to support school activities. The board recognized the organizational efforts of Kevin Jordan and Liz Morgan in making the fundraiser a success.
In addition to Flyer Fest, the board celebrated the success of the Polar Punch event, which raised $11,815 despite participation being lower than anticipated. The event was marked by enthusiasm and community involvement, with participants donning costumes and braving cold waters for a good cause. Such events have strengthened community ties and highlighted the importance of engagement in supporting school programs.
The board meeting also included updates on various educational initiatives and district goals. The Comprehensive Achievement and Civic Readiness report, formerly known as the World’s Best Workforce, was presented to the board. The report outlined goals related to school readiness, closing achievement gaps, and ensuring students are prepared for college and careers. Data was shared on early childhood readiness, with metrics indicating strengths and areas needing improvement, such as identifying parts of a book. The board expressed a commitment to addressing these gaps and enhancing student achievement across the district.
Furthermore, the Little Flyers Child Care Center provided updates on its progress, including business partner tours and room sponsorship offers to local businesses. The center’s enrollment figures were shared. The board is hopeful for a positive outcome from a $300,000 grant application, which would further support the center’s development.
Significant donations to the district were also acknowledged, including a $21,000 contribution from the Toma Trust for Lincoln’s Library, as it transitions from a K-5 school to a preK-2 school. This and other donations will enhance library collections across the district, supporting literacy and learning.
The board moved on to discuss new business, including resolutions concerning recent school board elections and adjustments to the meeting schedule for 2025. These resolutions were passed after brief discussions. The meeting concluded with the final reading of seven policies related to staff development, student achievement assessment, and technology usage, all of which were approved unanimously.
