Little Ferry School Board Analyzes Student Assessment Data and Approves Sports Funding Adjustments
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Little Ferry School Board meeting, discussions centered on the analysis of student assessment data, revealing significant improvements in key academic areas, and the unanimous approval of a funding adjustment for the athletics program.
The meeting kicked off with a detailed presentation on the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) and Dynamic Learning Map (DM) results. The data revealed that district students demonstrated notable improvements in their academic performance compared to the previous year. Particularly noteworthy was the increase in grade five science scores, which climbed from 20% to 33% passing. The overall science scores returned to pre-COVID levels, offering a positive outlook on the district’s educational recovery post-pandemic. Sixth-grade math scores also saw a substantial improvement. This progress was attributed to specific interventions, one of which was the “bubble boost,” aimed at assisting students who were on the cusp of passing.
The presentation also detailed the district’s enrollment statistics, noting that it averages between 90 and 110 new students annually, with a significant number being multilingual learners. The current year aligns with these averages. Data comparisons to state averages painted a favorable picture, with Little Ferry’s students performing at or above state levels in many areas. While challenges persisted, particularly in grades three and eight, the district’s scores remained competitive. The algebra scores stood out, prompting a recommendation from county education specialists to increase student enrollment in higher-level math courses, a suggestion the board is considering for future implementation.
Beyond the academic data, the board explored new initiatives designed to bolster educational outcomes. Among these was the gradual introduction of Edge Climber, a digital platform to streamline data management, which is expected to replace the traditional data walls used by educators. Additionally, a “double dose” of phonics instruction was introduced for foundational years, specifically targeting grades K-2. The continuation of the “Rise and Shine” morning math club was contingent upon the arrival of title fund resources.
A notable initiative discussed was the “portrait of our 90” campaign, which aims to cultivate a student profile characterized by qualities such as kindness, inquisitiveness, and hard work. This initiative will guide monthly recognitions and broader school culture efforts. The board also launched a Professional Learning Community (PLC) focused on reframing student behavior management, emphasizing proactive strategies like awareness and relationship-building. The reintroduction of the “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) initiative seeks to promote device-free reading, alongside monthly middle school reading projects to further literacy efforts.
In the realm of financial decisions, the board approved a sidebar agreement with the Little Ferry Education Association, which outlined adjustments in sports-related funding over the next few years. This agreement was part of a broader discussion regarding the district’s athletics program, which had been a significant topic in the executive session. The decision to modify sports funding was made with unanimous support.
The meeting also included a report from the board secretary, who confirmed that financial reports for July and August had been closed successfully, keeping the district ahead of statutory requirements. The auditors had completed their fieldwork for the general fund, and updates on various construction projects were provided. The completion of most major projects was noted, though minor delays in certain ventilators persisted due to parts availability. Progress on the retaining wall construction was underway, with anticipation for a permit from the Department of Community Affairs to proceed with additional work.
