Little Ferry School Board Moves Forward with Preliminary Budget and Middle School Expansion Plans
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Little Ferry School Board meeting, attention was given to the submission of the preliminary budget to the county office for approval, alongside progress updates on the Little Ferry Middle School expansion project. The board also addressed state aid discrepancies and celebrated student achievements.
The board approved the submission of the preliminary budget to the county office, with an emphasis on the discrepancy between the state aid formula and actual funding received. Although an increase of $318,046 in state aid was noted, it fell short of the $2,153,638 expected if the formula had been fully applied. This shortfall highlights ongoing challenges in securing adequate funding, despite additional aid for preschool education amounting to $327,467. The board is working within these constraints to finalize the budget by April 20th.
Progress on the Little Ferry Middle School expansion was another focal point, with updates indicating substantial advancements in construction. Key developments include the completion of structural steel framing, underground piping installation, and foundational work.
Additionally, the board awarded the bid for a new kitchen, with work set to commence after the school year ends. Financial reports revealed a February profit in the food service program, boosted by reintroduced local pizza Fridays.
In recognition of student efforts, the board celebrated the students of the month, Letti Santos from grade five and Kathleen Aragott from grade six, for their academic diligence and positive contributions to their school community. The meeting also included a report on two unfounded HIB (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) incidents.
Routine updates were provided on literacy classes for young children and preparations for upcoming standardized testing. The board addressed public queries on agenda items, clarifying details about a resolution on school facilities projects and the leasing of a new building for office use.
