Littleton Conservation Commission Plans Spring Burns to Combat Invasive Species
- Meeting Overview:
In an effort to manage invasive plant growth, the Littleton Conservation Commission discussed collaborating with the Littleton Fire Department for controlled burns in select conservation fields. Additionally, the commission reviewed Community Preservation Committee (CPC) applications for boardwalk projects and invasive species treatment, and noted the postponement of a discussion on the use of a town-owned parcel.
The most notable discussion of the meeting centered on the proposed controlled burns aimed at countering invasive species. The commission is working with the Littleton Fire Department to potentially conduct burns in fields at Long Lake Park, New Town Hill, and Mary Shepard. These locations were identified as potential sites following the snow melt, with efforts to avoid areas with significant poison ivy presence. The burn aims to slow invasive growth by maintaining a slow, hot burn, which is more effective in eliminating unwanted plant species. The feasibility and effectiveness of such burns were discussed, with the understanding that the fire department would execute the operation.
Another agenda item was the review of CPC applications for projects such as boardwalk installations at Webster’s Woods and Castle in the Trees, as well as treatments for terrestrial invasive species at Hartwell, YAP, and New Town Hill. Recent revisions were made to these applications based on updated quotes, resulting in a lower requested funding amount. The inclusion of ADA components and contingency plans for unforeseen material costs were noted as positive factors. The commission unanimously supported these project applications, with further discussion scheduled for an upcoming CPC meeting.
