Littleton Considers New School Project with Significant Financial Implications
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Littleton Board of Selectmen meeting, the proposed Shaker Lane school project emerged as the most significant topic of discussion. The project has a total estimated cost of $98.1 million, with the state contributing a grant of $38.2 million. This leaves the town’s net cost at $59.9 million, which decreases to $50.7 million after deducting the startup costs. The total cost, including interest, amounts to $73.7 million. However, if the town can provide $500,000 annually over 20 years through levy funds, the town’s true cost could drop to $63.7 million. Without these funds, the loan will be paid without outside levy funds.
Miss George A. Sanders highlighted the financial implications of voting against the project. She warned that rejecting the proposal would necessitate $46.73 million in repairs without state or federal assistance, close to the cost of constructing a new school. She expressed her intention to vote in favor of the new school, emphasizing the long-term financial benefits.
The meeting also addressed the upcoming special election related to the school project. It was announced that a Proposition 2 and a half override question will be on the ballot to secure funding for the project. Early election ballots were sent out, and voters were reminded that their participation is crucial.
Additionally, the meeting introduced Michael Wilson as the new director of veteran services in Littleton. Wilson committed to ensuring that veterans and their families receive the benefits they deserve, including healthcare, pensions, and education assistance. He encouraged veterans to reach out to his office for support, emphasizing that they are not alone.
